How to get display mode turned down?

I just purchased this game with great expectations from online and G4TV review, but as usual I am having Tech issues with a game I wanna play

My Comp. is:

Compaq Presario V6000 with Vista Premium Home Edition-SP1

2.0 Ghz AMD Turion64

1.0g Memory

Geforcego 6150, 256mg Video card

All my drivers are up to date (I play WoW so I keep them up so it runs good)

Here are my 2 issues....

#1 are sound issues.  I get crackling sounds/Music whenever I am zoomed into a planet, large space object-ship.  I even get this during the menu screen where there is a planet rotating in the background.  I had similar issues when I first installed WoW, but those were resolved with graphics tweeks.  I have tried changing all the settings to low, but it still does not solve the issue.  So far the game works fine, just the sound issue is annoying

#2 is how to set the resolution size? I only have 2 display modes active in the menu options.  I am currently running at 1280x800 at 60mHz.  This is not even one of the options for me in the menu.  I am pretty sure I could resolve my sound issues if I could turn down the screen resolution.  I tried to follow another post about editing a file to change the resolution, but I could not find the file it talked about to edit.

If anyone can please help I would appreciate it.  I can't stand to run games with problems and will probably end up deleting the game if I cannot get it working well.  Don't wanna do it cause the game looks great, so if you can help, please do so!

End of quote

The file that you'll need to modify is in C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting\user.setting

AppData is a hidden folder by default, so you'll have to make sure you have Show hidden files & folders enabled. There you can manually set the resolution to whatever you want.

As for the sound issue, I remember posts about it but I don't remember all the possible solutions. I remember one recommendation from IC to turn off Bloom in the graphics options. Also make sure your game is updated to 1.05 (or 1.095 beta). Quite a few things changed in the patches (1.095 especially optimizes the engine for better performance on lower-end computers), so it's possible your sound problem resolves itself, who knows!
