GAL CIV I and Altarian Prophecy on Vista
I just received a new computer that is running Vista. Even though they are old I still play Gal Civ I and AP. So far I can not get them to run under Vista. Any ideas on how to get them to run?
Thanks!

What error do you get?
I'd unistall adn then reinstall from Impulse.
The error is on startup. Right after the initial AP menu starts to load an MS Windows box pops up and says "gcloader.exe has stopped working" and the only option listed is to close the program. AP wont run at all. Galciv I will run from the executable, but games can't be saved (no error, it just doesn't save the game)
How would downloading from Impulse help?
Also, I don't know much about Vista. With many other programs it keeps asking for permission to do certain things, even to create a folder. I wonder if this is the problem, but I don't know how to turn off these security features.
Any help would be appreciated.
Okay, I figured it out. I checked on the properties on each of the executables and found a whole lot more options in Vista than in previous Windows versions. Included in these options is a choice to emulate XP-SP2 or 2000, so I selected 2000. On the next tab are options to allow read and write access. By default a newly installed program does not have write permission and therefore can't save a game. Once the options are adjusted with full permissions and XP or 2000 emulation everything works fine!
Vista should really give the option to select these options a the time a new S/W package is installed.
I had the same problem. I went into the program file and noticed that the gcloader was connected to the GalCiv icon with the white square around it. There was another .exe file that was the GalCiv icon without a white square. I made a desktop shortcut to that icon. Now the game loads just fine. I also run Vista.
