GUI Shift/Change?

Playing 1.03, deep into a game, and all of the sudden, the 'skin' of the game changes: the icons, colors and decorations are different. The color scheme changed from greyish to silvery-white. A bit confusing, as I wasn't expecting it and didn't change it on purpose. I may have missed something in the manual. Anyone know what I've done?
I'm still new to the game, and playing it on lower settings to avoid getting eaten/beaten much too quickly. One strategy that I've found to work for me is trading for technology. I'll give whatever it takes to get technology from anyone I come across, but avoid giving anyone else anything more than the most basic technology in return. To make this work, I'll purchase outright any trade good that comes along, and then use some of them (like aphrodisiac and frictionless clothing) in trade for technology and cash. Lots of cash. This allows me to quickly get way ahead in research. I get those freighters out quickly to develop hard-to-live-without economic relationships.
One memorable moment. Playing in a huge universe, I've got a nice comfy corner in the bottom left of the map. The Drengin are sitting between me and the middle of the map. I'd tried to focus on research and building trade, which fortunately included faster ships. One of my scouts discovered a cluster of three very nice systems with earthlike planets on the far side of the Drengin. I shipped off three colony ships. Only then did I notice the Drengin colony ships lumbering that way too. I called in the sensor drones and the scouts that were nearby, and managed to screen off the advancing Drengin colony ships until mine arrived.
