Image Edit of .tga pics defaults INCORRECTLY to stupid Windows PAINT app

Image Edit of .bmp pics defaults CORRECTLY to PHOTOSHOP

Using Stardock SkinStudio 6.2 freebee download.  Clicking the EDIT button for .BMP images flawlessly caused the files to open in Photoshop.  Clicking the EDIT button for .TGA images opens them in the stupid Windows Paint program.  There seems to be no preferences provision to identify a default image editor.  And why .BMPs open in Photoshop, and .TGAs open in PAINT, totally baffles me.  The only work around is to SELECT ALL-COPY the image in PAINT, NEW FILE-PASTE into a Photoshop file.  EDIT the image in Photoshop.  SELECT ALL-COPY the image in Photoshop, PASTE back into the open file in PAINT, and SAVE.  Am I missing something, or is this a pretty dumb bug to have survived beta, and made it straight thru to publication?

I'm not sure why TGA's default to paint, but it is pretty common for different image formats to open in different applications.

Try this: find a TGA file and right-click on it. Then choose "open with." Then go to the bottom of the window and select "choose default program..." Now you should be able to select Photoshop from a list of options--if it doesn't show up, don't worry; you can still browse to find it.

Once you set one TGA file to open by default in PS, then all TGA files will open in PS from then on. ;)

Thanks for that heads up Mirs, but my .tga files were already associated with Photoshop. See my comment immediately above yours. I did find the SkinStudio preferences setting in TOOLS-PREFERENCES-ADVANCED TAB-CUSTOM COMBOBOX-PICK CUSTOM APP BUTTON to set a default image editor for the app. Once I set that to Photoshop, everything worked perfectly. Thanks again for your support. tc.

In SKS advanced settings, find the checkbox for DO NOT CONVERT TGA TO PNG. Is this unchecked? If it is checked, uncheck it and give it a try.

If that doesn't work... Is photoshop top of the list in SKS editing options?

oops, just noticed you have the free version. You may not have advanced settings in this case.

As Night Train correctly identified, the problem is with the OS settings for opening PNG files not TGA files.

SKS will automatically convert TGA files to PNG files when you click to open/edit them and so the editor associated with PNGs is used instead.  On your machine this is still associated with MS Paint.  You can either use Open or Edit to open an associated app and I suspect that Photoshop set itself to be the Edit action but not the open action - possibly because photoshop is so slow to open.

As for why bmps open in Photoshop, well I guess they did set both the associations for .BMP.
