Hey all I picked up this game a couple days ago, and I am trying to learn resource management/how to gain faster. I have been playing single player and I seem to run out of crystal really fast? And it seems to take forever to get 2-3 starting planets/mining colonies going. I have not been able to find any noob strageties on the web hard as I try so if anyone would like to help me out that would be awesome. Great game though, can no wait to get better.

When you start out, you have much more metal than crystal. Many players sell 200 metal to the black market and buy 200 crystal.

Build a capital ship factory and make the colonizer cap ship (your first capital is free). Then send this to your nearest asteroid, kill the natives and colonize it. The colonizer alone can probably take care of 5 native ships alone. Otherwise make a small fleet of assault frigs and take the meatier planets with the cap ship and frigs.
Scuttle the capital ship factory (you won't be using it for a long time)

Also ah, upgrade the new planets civilian infrastructure ASAP so that you aren't losing money to it and build the crystal/metal mines ASAP.

There is a specific order that is generally accepted by veterans to begin the game with.
Someone may come by and post it, I can't remember exactly but I'll try my best.

Build the cap factory.
Build crystal mine.
Build 2 scouts set to "auto-explore".
Build rest of the mines.
Queue up the colonizer cap ship.
Someone in there buy some crystal and sell some metal to the black market.

Sorry if you already knew some of this stuff I just threw out everything I know about starting up.

Having a lack of mineral is a common thing on this game. The best option is to use the Black Market to buy the needed crystal. Sell excess metal if you have to, usually more than 1000 metal is a luxury unless you're planning for expensive research or building a big fleet quickly.

Also if you find an Ice planet with 3+ crystal mines, make that a priority. Research/build Trade Outposts to get more credits to buy more crystal, etc, etc.
