On the separation of Church and State:
I want to place the sixteen Bodhisattva vows, as well as the Sh'ma, in every classroom in the United States. I also want a license tag for my car that lets everyone know I'm a believing, practicing Jew. We should all be JuBus, right?. Not.
What is this need some have to let everyone and his brother know he's a this or that and that everyone else really should be the same? The height of smug in South Carolina is a license tag that says "I believe" with a cross. As if Jews don't believe, or Hindus, or Muslims. And this to be state sponsored. Oy.
Our first, last, and best advertisment for our own particular faith tradition should be our behavior. Its not what we profess, its what we do, that counts. Classrooms, license tags, state and national parks, and other public spaces should not be billboards for a particular faith. We should ourselves be a walking billboard, so to speak, wherein our loving kindness, study, and prayer supports the world. And this does not require public funding.
Be well.
