Auto ship designer

I love the auto ship designer function in ToA. I'm not a big fan of designing my own ships, and as I stroll through the tech tree, I don't want to have to worry about constantly updating my designs. However, I have a question. I have figured out how to emphasize a particular trait on ships (beam vs. missiles, shields vs. armor, etc.) but it seems that the designer only uses about a dozen of the myriad templates available. Is there a way to get it to build battleships instead of destroyers, for example?
