N00b post: Victory conditions?

Just what exactly constitues a victory?

OK, so I played two games all the way through as the TEC and both times won with a message of "Peace is restored."

In the first case I eliminated everyone except one AI with whom I had a peace treaty. So I figured that you have to kill or make peace with everyone.

In the second case, I elimated all but two AI's, both of whom I had a peace treaty with. However, it didn't end right away as I thought. It seemed that they were still fighting each other, so I guessed that means EVERYONE has to be at peace. In any case, I said, to heck with it and started trying to completely destroy the weaker of the two. I started at it, and not long into my campaign (before I even took one world) I got the "Peace is restored" winning screen.

So, the game ended in the mist of my war with one of the two.

What, exactly, are the victory conditions? Does the computer calculate a win when you (for example) take a majority or the worlds?

Please help. Thank you.

Did you already declare war on that AI?
Maybe the two AIs allied again.

if you are allied with an AI('s) and kill off all the other AI's, then you win. If you wish to continue playing, you might soon find your ally breaking all the agreements and at war with you.

If the teams are locked Im pretty sure its a victory if all hostiles are destroyed but if its not locked (or maybe a difficulty setting dunno) then the AI will declare war on someone (including you, even at 100% friendly with all alliance stuff) until someone wins.

Since one of the patches (1.03?) The AI can 'surrender'. They usually do this when they have just one planet left, and are heavily out-numbered (more than 10-1).

Personally, I prefered it when you had to eliminate every enemy planet. There's something slightly dissatisfying about getting so close and then having victory appear at some random point.

I don't think that is correct. I've played with unlocked teams many times and won with an AI ally who hasn't 'turned' on me. There can be more than one victor in a heliopolitical sense--that is, I suppose everyone on the surviving team 'wins'--but from a gameplay standpoint, I'd say the player with the best postgame stats is the true winner.

Well it definatly CAN happen, I'm not sure why or what makes it happen. The locked thing was a guess.

I've played w/locked teams, and have gotten the victory message before I wiped out the last AI. I even got it once when I decided to leave the game running for an hour and had dinner. Of course, I did have 5-6 Nova's auto-firing the whole time .
