Cannot see 3D Planets or Ships

I've searched a little bit here before posting, and was unable to find a pdf manual in the install directory. I got the game from Impulse and had some issues installing it, but after a few download attempts it finally decompressed ok and installed. I am running Vista with the latest Nvidia drivers for my 9800GX2. Game is stable, and seems to be running well... except I seem to be unable to view the planets or ships in 3D. It just looks like 'stick figures' for the ships and only circles for the planets, no matter how close I zoom in. My guess is I am missing a setting or something, but without a manual it's hard to say. Is this is a common issue?

Sounds like your Tactical zoom level is set really low. In the options you'll find a slider for it. The higher you set it the farther out you can zoom before getting the 2D tactical images.
