Yeah Mega Events

After sinking about 3 or 4 hours into a game I received notice that the <insert AI team> would become more powerful with each passing turn and destroy them now or watch them rule the galaxy. Ok, nothing new from before... except they were already #1 in military might so this wasn't a good start for me. After spending another hour or so working really hard to knock this AI threat off their pedestal I was making good progress and had them down to two planets with everything looking my way. Just keep sending the waves of transports and I would prevail. Until Mega Event #2 that a wave of apathy was sweeping the universe and all production, research ...whatever gets knocked down to zero. So with the big threat on the ropes (although he was down to two planets and cranking out 200+ in research AND production and I could barely keep up with ten planets and several spies on his planets) ALL of my production and tax gets turned off (but not his). I only need to research Xeno Medicine and that is ONLY 167 weeks away at 100% research. YEAH TEAM!!!

Two notes:
1. I am not a die hard Gal Civ player, but I have a few score games under my belt; and it has dawned on me...I am never the player that gets the stupendous shot in the arm: kill me now or watch my production go up exponentially each turn bonus. (Do human players EVER get this bonus?? We don't need it, but geez why do we always suffer from it).

2. Mega Events seemed like they were nice LITTLE twists of fate that added sub-plot to Dark Avatar. Holy Cr@p! I just watched 5 hours of gameplay wasted because there was absolutely nothing I could do to overcome those two events as they were dealt to me. I am suspecting I don't need story mixed with my strategy game after all...  But of course I will say in the designers defense, Mega Events are just a mouse click away from disappearing :) I just never saw an entire game get shot because of them.

Yea, wait till you get the tourism trade bonus event. I have 0% tax rate and am banking ~1000bc a turn! Talk about ruining a good game. I lost interest except that I'm going for the Ascension victory and figured I'd play with the Terror Stars. Found them to be pretty much usless other then for the PR!!!

Except when I turn Mega Events off, the exponential thing happens anyway. So unless my install has something wrong with it (quite possible), you're stuck with that one.

Or you could be like us smart folk and load your last save and never get that mega event.

I always treat mega-events as what-if scenarios. When they throw you a new challenge in an otherwise dull game, then it's worth playing. When they over-complicate an already complicated game, then it's more worthwhile to reload. After all, chances are there will be another mega-event before the game is over.

Does anybody know exactly how many different mega-events there are that may appear in ToA?

That sounds like a random event and not a Mega one. Even if you turn off the mega events you can still get the random events that are still in from Dread Lords.

The mega events happen WAY too frequently.. Arent they supposed to be rare?
Why do they happen in every single game ive played?
Always someone that "gets more powerful as time passes", always someone that found a precursor ship, always some insanely huge cash bonuses or penalties.

I want to play a NORMAL fair game, but with a RARE chance of something like that happening.. Like ONCE in a long game, not 5 times.

Wow,
My two beer induced rant may have uncovered something that actually needs to be addressed. Do we need a button to turn off random events as well? Discuss among yourselves... ;)

Also, thanks for the tidbit about reloading. I never thought about it as I have never had it impact a game so severely before, but now I know.

Cheers,

Usually the random events are much milder and not game changing. Like the x race gets more powerful per turn. I think there may be two versions of that one(as a few events have) where in the Random version they only get a +1 to one ability per turn, meaning you could play for thirty game years and not really notice a difference. The bigger(and possibly mega) variety gives +1 to all their abilities per turn. I'm going from frayed memory here so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I think they work.

Basically a random event never effected the outcome of a game for me and so I don't see a need to toggle them off as they are just a little spice and not game altering liek the Mega events.
