Always falling behind in tech...

Nowadays, when I play Dark Avatar, I always fall behind in Technology. I play as the Terrans on Normal, but I'm always in last place, because I can't keep pace with everyone on weapons and other stuff. That means my military sucks, and I can't do anything good. How can I keep up with the other civs in research? I usually get a fair number of planets, and build labs, but it doesn't work. I hate being the last place civ!  X-(   HELP!!!

Hi!
I always fall behind in Technology.

On maso+ difficulty that's normal. For lover difficulties I suggest you to set sliders so, that you always spend about 50% of money for research (spending always at 100%, sliders at 1%/49%/50%), and to build on each planet at least 1/4 of labs. And OFC allow tech trading, push your diplomacy ability high, and go on tech shopping among AIs. Just never sell diplo tech, ground combat tech and wartech you exclusively own.

Focused Research, plain and simple. You can't stay with them on overall RPs produced, but while they're all over the place in research you can keep your focus on your must haves and outresearch them in the areas that are important.

I could be a grammar nanny, but I try to avoid it, especially with typos from info wellsprings such as Iztok. Iztok hecklers, on the other hand... ;-)

Lets see... there's "garden", "fire", "Canadian"....

As to the Original Post:

1-TRADE. Trade away techs, especially early, especially with minor races, especially in DA. In TA alot of the "loopholes" are amended or removed, but in DA you can get Crazy Eddie type deals for techs. KEEP important techs to yourself, like weapons or expensive ones that are oddball. Trade away any tech the AI is likely to get anyway. Trade with everybody all at once. It's called "tech whoring", but hey... everybody needs a hobby.

2-Research planets... dedicated all research, all the time focused planet(s), especially if there is a research bonus present.

3-Go neutral... Neutrality Learning Centers are your friend. Plus, you don't tick off the factions as badly because you're in the middle. Lessens the chance you get warred upon.

4-Keep your slider on the upper end as soon as the colony rush is over. I never run less than 40% research until I get to the near end game and I don't need that next weapon anymore.

I've been playing on the higher type difficulty levels and I too am always behind in research o don't think you're necissarily doing anything wrong. As others stated, you can still beat out the AI by getting more useful techs. I stay clear of the fusion generator, starbase and mining branches until i really have time for them. I usually wind up stealing those through invasion since all AI's seem to get them.

What also may help you is getting some economy starbases around your tech capital for the bonus production. Then theres the nanorecorders and hypercomputers that will add to your reserach. Lastly play with a good number of minors and get all of their research treaties.

Another thing to keep in mind is your economy, the more money you make the more money goes to research and industry.
