load the game up, go to options, click mods... select the mod and click activate.

Now go to options and select the mod you want to play under "mods"

Go into the options screen in the game and enable the mod. Make sure you have the latest version of the game--if you created that Mods folder yourself, then you didn't have an updated version and won't be able to use mods.
