Freighters and engines

I think I know the answer to this but is there any ongoing benefit to building freighters with faster engines? Faster than hyper/ion drive (1 pc/wk)? I realize faster freighters could get you to the initial destination quicker for establishing the trade route (the only benefit I can think of) but after that it is always 1 pc/wk, right? Faster freighters won't be able to outrun attackers or anything like that?

Correct. The same applies for life support - once the route is started, you don't need it any more.

Given the upkeep rates in TA, you might be better off establishing your trade routes, then "upgrading" your freighters to bare hulls and a module.

Non-combat ships in TA don't have maintenance costs I beleive.

Unarmed ships had zero upkeep in DL and DA, but have the same relative cost (as % of initial cost) as combatants in TA.

Unless of course this has been changed since beta 4.

That got changed back to 0 upkeep since then.

Beta 4b:
+ TWEAK: Ship Maintenance now excludes freighters and is lowered by 1%.

Beta 5:
+ TWEAK: Only constructors, terror stars and attack ships get charged maintenance now

So I was wrong in my non-combat ship statement, constructors get tossed into that pile as well for paying maintenance still.
