exactly how much can you really do?

I cant get rid of phase lanes and allow movement outside of a gravity well :(. Also most of the TC mods dont really change game mechanics as far as I can tell. If I am wrong please yell at me to correct my opiinion :D. I'd really like to mess around with the engine some though :(.

Not really possible as such, however you can put phase lanes between every planet on a custom map and simply hide them.

I was thinking of extending the grav well and manipulating them such that it would "feel" like open space, but a lot of the interface depends on the grav well as was pointed out by several people here.
