How Do I Disappear Windows Recycle Bin

I have a recycle bin on my dock ... so I'd like to get rid of the recycle bin on the desktop. But it refuses to be removed.

How do I get rid of it?

Do you have other Icons or shortcuts on your desktop? If you don't it is as simple as right click on you desktop somewhere, click arrange icons by, and then make sure that show desktop icons is not selected.

I usually follow the rule of hide instead of remove, much easier to get the item back if something goes wrong.

EDIT: It does make a difference what OS you are on. What I said applies to XP. I don't use Vista.
