StarDock Central download/Archive problem

Last couple of days when I try to archive some of the modules I recieve the follwoing error msg

There was an error downloading and archiving Dreams for the DeskScapes. The Following error occurred:

Error: No files found within the XML file (Code: 16)

Result: Download and Archive failed (16)

Would you like to view the installation log file?

Not all of the modules fail in this manner. DesktopX seems to go into an endless loop of downloading . When it seems to be finished, it starts again rather than moving on to the next module. It would probably continue till I shut my machine off.

Wandering around the forums looking for similar issues, I stumbled upon a post about Impluse. So I downloaded that and installed it and tried to archive the modules. Evidently there's no way to archive a module unless it been installed first

Any assitance is appreciated.

Verify this is Stardock Central and not Impulse?
What does the error log say?
Go to tools, Internet, and refresh the XML.

Just to be sure run this program: http://sd.stardock.com/mike/apps/clear_cache_sdc.bat

After that be sure to restart Stardock Central.

Thanks for the response Seabass. So I deleted the Local Settings\Temp\sdcentral folder. Refreshed the XML data, Renamed my C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Backup folder and then restart StarDock Central and tried to archive All. Failed on Dreams, Dreams Maker and IP Iconset. All others came thru just fine. I located the sdc file in the temp folder and opened them with Winzip and processed a 'TEST' against the failed download files. All of them checked out ok. So now I'm confused about what's happening but at least I have current backup. :NOTSURE:

I'm not having the problem on this end so I am still pretty sure it has to be something with your Stardock Central. However lets try something else really fast just to see.

Try downloading the software through our new updated system Impulse.

You can find it here: http://www.impulsedriven.com/about.asp

Let me know if you have the same problems through there.

Hi Seabass, I downloaded the Full setup of Impulse and installed it after un-istalling the version I currently had installed. Checked the Enable Archive checkbox and preoceeded to My Dsktop. I can install the programs but I was unable to determine how to Archive the application on that tab. Clicked the Updates tab and the only thing that shows up is the application I have installed. Right-clicking shows an Archive option on the context menu , but clicking it doesn't seem to do anything except change the 'Update Available' label on the icon to 'Archiving {something -unable to read it that fast} and then reverting back to Update Available (instantly).  :NOTSURE:

dreams are Vista only....they will not install on XP

I can understand not being able to install if Vista is a reqirement, but I should still be able to archive the application on the off chance that I'll move to Vista someday. On another note when when I try to install an application using the Impulse tool, I get the following msg: There was a problem beginning the download. Please try again. The type initializer for 'W' threw an exception. So it looks like I can't archive or install using Impulse. Stardock Central is still able to install, and will archive most everything. For a while, I thought maybe the root of my problems might be related to my firewall. Shutting it off changed nothing. I still have no idea what the problem is, and it occurs on both my desktop and on my laptop. I installed Stardock Central on my laptop just to see if it could archive the applications. It reacts in the same manner as my desktop.

3dragon, I don't have Vista at home but I will try this out when I get to work in the morn. Is it 32 or 64 bit and are you on SP1 yet?
Seabass, I'm still running 32 bit XP with sp2. Probably apply sp3 Monday if I can pull it from MS site. (At least rumor has it that SP3 will be rtm Monday)

I spoke with the developers of Impulse today and I had a couple of notes for everyone.

1) Deskscapes. You have to install it in order to archive it. It has to download and unpack to archive. At the moment since Deskscapes is one of only a few that is Vista only it remains the only one that should be a problem. If you like you can use Stardock Central to do the task for you.

As a side note if you intend to download and install our software to different OSs I would always recomend making it a fresh install/download. With service packs and multiple updates on the way it just stands to reason to be a safe bet.

2) If you archive with Impulse you can only restore with Impulse (for right now that is, look for further updates).

Please let me know if you have questions or anything I can help with.

I also have the same trouble (since one week) with latest IconPackager version on SDC (and i also clear cache, reset XML data and so ...) i've not Impulse installed and still on XP SP2 32 bit... with same kind of error message, just change the name off downloaded application in the error message as well as the logfile.

I was able to do it from both just now. It has to be a bugged setting or security setting.

Just to try it out Neo can you try though Impulse? Once you are in there just right click on the icon and select archive. Let me know if it works through there. If so I have a few things we can try with Stardock Central if it is your prefered method.

I didn't want to install Impulse for now (very bad souvenir from big problems when SDC came out and Component Manager was still there ...), but i finally did ... well tried to because installation feels strange  (:(

1°) when i enter my serial (copy and paste fron SDC) for Object Desktop, i've an error message telling me "The registration you have entered is invalid. Please check your select product, email adress and serial number, then try again (ref: 2)"

BTW, if i look closer in list of registrations, i can see that Object Desktop does not exist anymore (though i suppose that's the reason of the previous error ... )

The serial for Object Desktop Ultimate and Wincustomize account have been automaticly completed, i think taken from my Stardock.net account as well as ObjectDock Plus (for ObjectDDock Plus the serial with Impulse is different that thee one with SDC  :SURPRISED: ), but:

- Apogee Icons
- Aquarium Desktop 2007
- CursorFX PLus
- CursorXP
- Orion Icons
- Utopia Icons
- Wincustomize Browser
are empty with message (Associated with Stardock.net account) and i have to do a copy and paste from SDC (updating registrations are working) but Wincustomize browser for which i din't find any serial ...

Now my opinion about Impulse :(

1°) No settings possibilities  :(

I don't want at all to have Impulse data Folder (and in first the backup folder) in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Impulse , i WANT to be able to put that on another partition of disk !!!!!!
Well none of the settings possibilities of SDC in fact :(

2°) When archiving applications there's nothing which is indicating the progress of download and if donwnload has been correct, no info if betas or released apps, no choice of auto archive or not, no choice to override or not when archiving, (maybe i forgot some ...)  :(

3°) I've seen that 5 applications installed on my PC have updates avaible and these updates are not avaible in SDC, why ? :

- CursorFX Plus
- Object Desktop Premium Skins
- SkinStudio 6 Pro
- Theme Manager
- ObjectDock Plus (for that one impossible to archive, i get an error message in french which seems to be linked to Impulse and not to ObjectDock Plus ...  :SURPRISED: )
- and finally Iconpackager V 3.99.146 (which i download successfully but without the icon set which is queued in the pack on SDC - maybe that's the reason of the error of archiving with SDC ?)

Conclusion:
I don't like at all (and it's nothing to say it ...) Impulse and i won't use it unless it will be OK for my taste .
