ship auto design function question

Hi

I just downloaded TA a few days ago and started playing as the Korath.  I want to ask regarding the autodesign feature for ships, does the AI build a new design after the relevant new tech gets researched, or when better weapons are researched.  Also, if i ask the AI to design a ship for me with certain parameters given, does it design a new ship right after the next turn.  I noticed that there are like 20 versions of Defenders on the build template.  

My only problems with it is that it does not take into account of the latest weapons and armor techs i have reearched.  Like I have supreme miniture tech and drone sentries 3.  I want the AI to put as much anti missiles in a ship as possible.  but the max that it fits on a defender is that it only has 8 anti missile defense.  That is so low, the Kyrnn is coming out with ships that have like 280 missiles for weapons alone.
