WinCustomize to Expand into Mac & Linux Customization

WinCustomize to Expand into Mac & Linux Customization

Don't Fear the Penguin

2008 April Fools Joke  :D

For seven years, WinCustomize has been the home for Windows GUI Customization.  Users from around the globe come here every day to download skins, icons, wallpapers and more to change the way the Windows Operating System look, feels and behaves.  While Windows remains the dominant operating system in the world, we've been watching the steady growth of both Apple's OS X and Linux as alternative OS choices.

As both have matured and grown in popularity, we've seen new opportunities in skinning, and noted that there is surprisingly little in focused support or communities dedicated to skinning these platforms.

It's always been our attitude that skinning is about giving users choice and artists a place to showcase and share their work.  We want that same choice and opportunity to be available to our friends on the other side of the OS aisle too.

The changes won't be immediate as we have work to do on the site to ensure that we work properly with Konqueror, Safari and Galeon.  We're even planning a special text-only version for those of you who refuse to use a GUI at all and surf the web using Lynx.

For our initial offerings, we'll be launching theme galleries for KDE and Gnome, and MacOS X Dashboard Widgets.  Expect it to be handled via a subsite sort of like http://dream.wincustomize.com/  This will allow us to make a Linux and Mac browser compatible site much quicker than trying to go through and convert all of WinCustomize.

This is actually just our first step in in supporting the skinning world beyond our native platform.  Once the site is there to support it, we will begin work on porting some of our more popular apps to these other platforms.

Great joke guys! You had me up to the part about Lynx. Ah, now if only it were true, I'd bail on MICRO$OFT faster than you can say Windowblinds. :CONGRAT:

I'm so excited to hear this because I've considered switching to Mac for a long time. And after my experience with Vista, I'm even more likely to do so if Windows 7 isn't way, way better. One of the big things keeping me with Windows is all the fun stuff in Object Desktop (and a few other key apps).

An obvious April Fool's joke (text only custimization -ha ha). However, I think you are going to find more and more people, especially in the global market converting to Linux or Mac. I've already decided that my next computer will most likely be a Mac with a dual boot with Windows for occasional use for games and the rare Windows only app that I can't replace. If I go that route, my years of subscribing to OD and Wincustomize may come to an end. In any case, it might be worth thinking about expanding to other OS's in the future - why not? One would think that the graphics design and digital art folks that use Macs might like something more than the current, very limited, GUI customization options. Enough of my rant - good joke, you almost had me going

A mac is so perfect why would you want to customize it?

I would use Linux Ubuntu in a heartbeat if Stardock and the Wincustomize downloads were compatible. Is Ubuntu on the table with you?

Seeing the great work that the folks behind Compiz and Emereld does, Stardock wouldn't stand a chance and would be redundant.

It's not.

Stardock has been pretty successful at most of what they've set there site on.  But linux isn't one of those things.  :)
