WinCustomize to Expand into Mac & Linux Customization

Don't Fear the Penguin

2008 April Fools Joke  :D

For seven years, WinCustomize has been the home for Windows GUI Customization.  Users from around the globe come here every day to download skins, icons, wallpapers and more to change the way the Windows Operating System look, feels and behaves.  While Windows remains the dominant operating system in the world, we've been watching the steady growth of both Apple's OS X and Linux as alternative OS choices.

As both have matured and grown in popularity, we've seen new opportunities in skinning, and noted that there is surprisingly little in focused support or communities dedicated to skinning these platforms.

It's always been our attitude that skinning is about giving users choice and artists a place to showcase and share their work.  We want that same choice and opportunity to be available to our friends on the other side of the OS aisle too.

The changes won't be immediate as we have work to do on the site to ensure that we work properly with Konqueror, Safari and Galeon.  We're even planning a special text-only version for those of you who refuse to use a GUI at all and surf the web using Lynx.

For our initial offerings, we'll be launching theme galleries for KDE and Gnome, and MacOS X Dashboard Widgets.  Expect it to be handled via a subsite sort of like http://dream.wincustomize.com/  This will allow us to make a Linux and Mac browser compatible site much quicker than trying to go through and convert all of WinCustomize.

This is actually just our first step in in supporting the skinning world beyond our native platform.  Once the site is there to support it, we will begin work on porting some of our more popular apps to these other platforms.

I'm so excited to hear this because I've considered switching to Mac for a long time. And after my experience with Vista, I'm even more likely to do so if Windows 7 isn't way, way better. One of the big things keeping me with Windows is all the fun stuff in Object Desktop (and a few other key apps).

"We're even planning a special text-only version for those of you who refuse to use a GUI at all and surf the web using Lynx." Thats the real stinker that got me, A text only GUI modification site :D The sad thing is most Mac users would be very happy with this announcement as Unsanity have totally dropped the ball, mind you I'm still waiting for the mac compatible version of multiplicity so maybe that was a previous april fool's.

Frankly speaking WC should really explore the other OSs to see what can be done to embrace them. This post is questionable since it is on 01 Apr, but also might be really the real deal. The only thing keeping me away from Linux has been the games support. Since I dun use obscure stuff, there are really little to deter me from switching. Wine and cedega is still not adequate enough for me.

Obviously a joke but count my vote for Linux themes as serious. I would pay just like I do on windows.

And then you're gonna come out to my house and paint the 63 Plymouth Valiant in my backyard to look like the Duke's Of Hazard car.

No chance. Every year on April fool's day, the first article you read that sounds even remotely "questionable" is absolutely untrue. In the past, they have been a bit more shocking... the saying WC was merging with DA, that was a good one. This year they went more for trying to be believable to trick more people...

you may also notice something when you try to click on a user name... true...

the username true bit is a site bug.  We're aware of it.

What about a few years down the road? I understand that this is definitely a 0104 joke... but some things might just change overnight, especially for things like linux galleries.
