Modding mesh files

I am new to modding, but I got the basics down. What I don't know is how to mod mesh files for ships and structures. If there is anyone out there who is experienced at this it would be greatly appreciated if you could lend a fellow modder a hand.

As for the original MESH files, if you don't have 3D MAX ($3000 and up) you are out of luck. You will need to make your own from scratch. This has been a quest of mine for some time.
