[MOD] Coming Soon: An offer you can't refuse, the Friendly Universe Mod

"Why can't we all just get along?"

These words were more or less the inspiration behind this mod.  I started a new FFA game, myself and 2 normal AIs (unlocked teams) and tried to win the game exclusively through diplomacy.  Apart from the a few scout ships and one colony-class capital ship, I had no army.  I conducted no military research, just colonized several neutral planets and researched my way through the civ tree.  Essentially, I was Switzerland :)

At any rate, the first offer I got from AI 1 was to kill 6 structures of AI 2.  I was like "Dude, I have NO ARMY!  What do you want me to do, trade 'em to death?!"  Then a bit later AI 2 asked me to give it 600 crystal.  I had to do some quick black market switching, but I made it happen.  I got my 25% rep, then he stayed silent for the rest of the game.  Actually, at some point, I think he asked me to destroy 10 of AI 1's ships.  Once again, I viciously pointed at my ONE (*cough* underpowered *cough*) capital ship.  I think he ignored me, however :)

I got frustrated at this point, because I now had no way to increase my reputation with either AI further.  Needless to say, my small empire (notably *unlike* Switzerland) got smashed into tiny pieces of shiny space glitter.  I decided to make some changes.

In this mod, I basically make the AI much more, errr...understanding.  It's much easier, without being totally unbalancing (I think).

-Rewards (reputation and resource) are increased
-Mission completion requirements are decreased
-The AI is willing to form alliances/treaties/etc sooner

And a couple other changes.  I think I covered every change in the included readme file.  I just submitted the file to Stardock a bit ago, so it'll be a bit before I can post a link to it.  I assume they'll be spending the time making sure I didn't replace every other line of gameplay.constants with "F**K U LOL HAV A VIRUS LOLS"  (I didn't do that, btw -_-)
At any rate, once they've green-lighted it, I'll update the post with a URL.  SoaSE isn't the first game I've modded, but this is the first time I've made something that I submitted for others to try.  It's been reasonably well-tested, and it only made my computer burst into flame a couple times, so I think it'll turn out mostly OK for you guys :D  (Just, errr, make sure you don't have any gasoline or C4 in/on/around your PC >.>)

this is a good idea, I think the AI is overly hostile and those stupid "attack my random enemy" missions are annoying. It'd be cool to reduce the frequency of mission requests too since they bug the heck out of you and non-aggression treaties are relatively easy to achieve. This would be awesome.

This is something you can do... Download the mod tools and reference files. They are very helpful. To change what you're talking about is 2 lines in the game info file. Same with the pirates. Some people like all the "action"... I don't, so I change them in with my mod when I want the basic rules to stay the same, or in every mod I play where they were left alone...

I am in no way, shape or form a modding guru... it really is a straightforward process with this game.

As for the OP, Have you experimented with positive missions? Or changed some of the mission parameters to happy day kind of things? It would be neat to have some of the missions be things like "bring 200 metal to my homeworld and we'll make some kegs and have a party, what you say???"

I'll see what I can do about my comments. edit: Alright I have no idea which Enity the Missions are located in *sigh* or for that matter if they are in the binary files.

mr_cyberpunk: all of the mission parameters are located in the GameInfo folder, and all start with Quest-something.

antracer: No, I hadn't actually thought about that. I'm not 100% sure that I totally understand what you mean about positive missions. But hey, sounds like a good idea to me, and that's what v 0.2 will be for :D

i thought about making friends and influencing AI as well. I would like it if the AI you are a peace with when you win wouldn't automatically go to war, just have a friendly little universe till i decided otherwise. I also wonder why other actions outside of missions have no effect. i could give the AI 1 mill in crystal and they still wouldn't like me any better. or i save their home planet from invasion but I still lose faction because i did kill 6 civ stations. I would like to see factions that are effected every time you kill a ship, either for or against you. Just some ideas take em or leave em.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

The mod has finally been published! (yay) Just go here to get it!

Another important note: upon further testing I received errors because I didn't include every file in GameInfo (I think). If you get errors, try copying the unchanged files from your current GameInfo folder into the /mods/friendly universe mod/gameinfo folder. I apologize for the inconvenience, but this problem didn't appear for me until the late (post-upload) stages of development.

Have fun, let me know what you think ^^
