The birthplace of the Republican Party

The birthplace of the Republican Party for those who are unaware is my hometown Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania. Although for the past 70 years as well as today the community is dominated by the Democratic Party. The first national convention in February 1856 was held in the LaFayette Hall this hall was torn down in 1895 leaving us only to imagine the essence of these historic events.

Although there were many one of the major planks of the adopted platform was for demanding the repeal of all the laws allowing slavery to be introduced into the free states,this was the first concerted act to repeal slavery. The convention itself was well attended. These men had a various political beliefs holding tempered debates on issues.One of the issues was slave labor vs free labor in the new territories.

The first nominations of the party were John C Freemont for President and William Dayton for Vice President the ticket presented for 1856 by the Republicans was defeated. Four years later the party nominated Abraham Lincoln.

I say for a City dominated by Democrats it's all ok I still remain in the company of good people and the history of my particular party will remain here regardless of the domineering party.

FYI...the actual birthplace of the Republican Party is Ripon, WI.

From the official website:
"On March 20, 1854, in the now famous Little White Schoolhouse, Alvan Earle Bovay, a local lawyer, led fifty-four of the area's one hundred eligible voters in forming a new political organization to "protect the voters against the Nebraska swindle" which threatened to extend slavery. Bovay suggested that the party be called Republican.

In 1976, Ripon's Schoolhouse was given status of a national monument. "

Pittsburgh is only where the first national converntion was held, not the actual place the party was started.

Too bad the current Republican party has about as much in common with the original party as candy corn has to corn on the cob.
