This should get you started.
WWW Link

It's also helpful to open up a Xion skin and look at how it's put together. As always, if you get stuck, ask here in the forums. Help is only a few keystrokes away!  :D

The Layer Keyword reference chart on the link Xiandi posted is pretty well documented and easy to understand.

Xion is a great thing to start with. :CONGRAT:

What do they mean by a PSD file ? and how do I create one?

PSD = Photoshop file  ;)

I use paint.net.  It supports and saves as Photoshop file-type (with a plug-in).
The GIMP also supports PSDs.

XION is so easy that even *I* can skin with it (however poorly my attempt)  ;)  :: ZuKidzRadio

If you don't have photoshop, paint.net has a plugin for PSD

Edit: Zu wins!

Thanks Fuzzy, and Thanks Zubz, wow there is a lot to take in

I have photoshop, and paint.net and PSP11

I have PSP9 and Photoshop CS2. I was used to using PSP and started trying to skin Xion with that but there was a problem with the layer sets and such. Turned out to be a good thing though because it has forced me to spend more time learning Photoshop.

If youre more accustomed to creating the graphics in PSP, then I would suggest saving them as png's and then importing them into Photoshop to put together the final .psd.

another question, when it come time to upload xion skins do they need to be zipped if they are the ones that you have made yourself?
Mrs. S, when it comes time to upload, you need to use a program like WinZip to change the file extention to .xsf.
killajosh,
If you go into your folder options in control panel, click on the view tab and uncheck the box for the line "Hide extentions for known file types", you will be able to see file extentions and can the change them manually to whatever you want.
You could then zip up your files and manually change the .zip to .xsf in windows explorer.
