Can't see ships, background

Hello fellows, first let me say I'm a big fan of Stardock..Started playing with Stellar Frontier been following ever since. So I booted up Sins and did the first tutorial, and I only saw planets and my red ship icons. If I zoom out far enough, I can see mineral icons, but no stars, nebulas, etc..I've tried all graphics settings, with no changes..I'm fairly sure this isn't the way its meant to be seen:A

System specs and drivers?

I have a 1.8 ghz AMD processor, 512 megs of ram, Nvidia Geforce4 MX440 card,(Perhaps lack of advanced pixel shaders?) with the latest drivers, reinstalled about an hour ago just in case, DirectX 9.0..I should note that the game runs quite smooth, despite my low end system, so I don't think thats the trouble.

Geforce 4 MX cards are not supported. They're actually (feature-wise) little more than faster Geforce 2s.

There is a workaround described in reply #2 of this thread for GalCiv2 if you want to try and get textures working without buying a new video card, but I can't say as to whether or not that will work with Sins.
