Alienguise question

Hi all,

Well, I recently heard about AlienGUIse, so decided to download it, but before using it I looked around the internet and heard quite a few people have had major problems with it.

So, my first question is: How risky is it to use it and can it cause some major problems? How can I avoid these?

Second question: Do I need anything else downloaded and installed on my computer before I install a theme from AlienGUIse?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

So, you're saying: Just install it and see if it screws anything up, eh? Heh.

If you downloaded it from Alienware it is perfectly safe.

Alrighty, so I don't need any other programs like Windows Blinds, Desktop X, etc. for it to work correctly, right?

The required apps are included in the download.

Ok...guess I'll go ahead and test it out either today or tomorrow. *gulps*

I'm downloading it now, and will give it a whirl as soon as it comes through. I probably won't keep it, but it's worth trying.

Well, just tried applying a theme and it froze kinda, so I hit cancel and the theme wasn't really installed, besides a few icons. So, I had to restart and when it came back on, it was the same. So, I tried changing the theme back to XP from the Alienguise menu and it froze. So had to restart again. This time when it came on I switched it back to XP through the control panel. Then restarted because it started freezing up, then when it came back on I tried uninstalling alien guise and it froze when I clicked uninstall. So, you know what? Fuck this program. Any help would be appreciated on how to get rid of this stupid thing.

Yes, so my question is. How do I uninstall this frigging thing without it freezing up?

Not sure why you're computer is freezing up, I installed it and all four themes a couple of months ago, and didn't have any problems. I'm not a computer genius, so couldn't tell you why yours is freezing up, that's too bad. Did you try uninstalling from the Start menu, click on... All Programs, Alienguise, Uninstall Alienguise.

With no information on your system, it's hard to tell you why. It's working perfectly on my system - well, once I uninstalled my trial for IconPackager (so AlienGUIse could apply its icons, as IP itself had expired).

I've tried going to My Computer/Add Remove Programs, but it brings up the same installer and says when it installs it will set back the default theme, and when I click yes or whatever it freezes. Is there a way to just delete all the files for the program or?

System Restore.

Do you know what System Restore is??

I suppose you don't have TweakUI installed. That includes several repair functions, for icons and the like.

Also, I do find it a bit surprising that for all your concern about AlienGUIse (and thanks for letting me know about it - looks awesome on my end) you didn't take the simple step of setting a system restore point.

I don't really know what system restore is, but it sounds evil. :p

I suppose I'll just not uninstall it, everything is running smoothly now without the Alienguies thing running.

It's hardly evil. Start/ All Programs/ Accessories/ System Tools/ System Restore. When it opens, pick the Restore Point prior to the AlienGUIse install. After the reboot, your system will be just as it was...minus AlienGUIse.

I may try that in the morning, getting late here.

Can anyone else confirm that this will help? And not cause more problems...

Yrags spot on. It's your best bet. Just pick a time/date prior to your install of AlienGUIse and hit the button. I, personally, have had very little success with System Restore but it should not 'faff' up your machine.

It'll work. However, it works best when you tell it to set a restore point. Get into the habit of doing this before any majot install and you'll have a lot fewer problems. It's all PMCS, man.

Try using safemode if that fails the other two options is contact stardock support or if your familiar with the registry just delete the program files & the registry entries or a more safer method would be delete the prog files & use ccleaner to deal to the registry entries.I don't recall any problems uninstalling alienguise or the other alien themes that are on that site,my guess is you have a wonky computer.

The only bad thing about AlienGUIse is that the SD proggies it uses are older. I think it uses WB 4-ish.......

Is there anything preventing ODNT and OD+ users from picking and choosing from the various themes' bits?

Gotta say, on my system, it all looks great. AlienGUIse's WB and IP themes, the "Invader" media player skin, the mini-Object Dock, plus various OD+ and DesktopX objects combine to look incredible on here, and they all play nicely with each other.
