noobie q: how do I colonize a planet?

ok... stupid question...  i just bought the game and played the tutorials. I started on a small map against the AI, and took the Advent race. i can't seem to figure out how to colonize planets - I recall being able to do this through the capital ship - I've already built my 1st free capital ship, yet i can't seem to colonize neighbouring planets.. what am i missing here? also, can i colonize asteroid fields.. where there are no planets within, but the field is rich with minerals and such? how do i mine those minerals in the asteroid belt?

Each race's frigate factory starts off being able to build colony frigates, and each race has one capital ship with a colonize ability (Akkan for TEC, Jarrasul Evacuator for Vasari, Progenitor Mothership for Advent).

For ore/crystals in grav wells that you can't colonize, the TEC and Advent use their colony ships to capture those mines, and the Vasari use their scouts.

No research or anything is needed for basic colonization or the capturing :)

Well you do need to research if you want to colonise an Ice or Molten world, and a lot of the small 1v1 maps have ice worlds next door. What's mmore, there's no error beep or anything, jsut a quiet text message telling you to research.

That might be the problem.
