In Australia it is 12.30am, Tuesday, September 21, 2004, which means that, for exactly 30 minutes, I have been aged 35.

I should feel a sense of loss, I suppose. Perhaps even a touch of 'the life is half-empty' dramatics would be appropriate. Yet, try as I might, all I seem able to rouse is overwhelming relief that I got here.

Two years ago, this was the birthday we weren't even sure that I'd live to see, so, I don't care how many candles my cake has, or how many lines my face has. I'll never be tempted to complain about 'getting older', because so many people just never get the chance.

I'll save you all some cake :)

yes ! i should, sal !. actually, i got 4 hours sleep and my hubby woke me to tell me that my (recently rescued) lorikeet was very ill. i had to run him down to the wildlife rescue guy (my neighbour, luckily) in my pajamas at 6.45am, and i've been up ever since. i should just accept that the mother rejected him because he was ill and that's why he was found in the first place, but i tried so hard, and i wanted him to live so badly ... i know the news won't be good. i just want to rewind to yesterday

Aww, Miggy.....I'm sorry.  It's hard to let animals go.  Sometimes mother nature knows best, but we humans are so used to fighting her and winning.....we (me anyway) just want to save every single critter we come across.

oh dharma, nature is so cruel sometimes, isn't it ?. i also want to save every helpless creature i find. and i thought i was really making progress with this bird. i was hand feeding him and he thought i was his mummy. he used to eat and then crawl up my shirt and fall asleep. i am always telling myself never again. thanks for caring dharma.

As usual, so very, very late.

The guilt is some what diminished by my having called on your birthday, but we must have something for the public record, mustn't we.

If anything, your birthday has given us a reason to be thankful for another year with which to more adequately acquaint ourselves with a person of such obvious virtue and such pleasing fault.

Ahab had his white whale and I have my Vanessa (no possessive intended. Who would be so presumptuous?). He had his test of spirit as do I. No matter how strenuously i row my little boat, I will forever be 27 to your 35, a distance to be measured in more than numbers.
