I'm gettin' me a citizenship!

I've decided that I'm going to apply for US citizenship.  I'm tired of being taxed like any other American, but not being able to vote. 

So, I'm off to download the application forms and see how much I need to save up in order to file.  As with everything else, there are fees.  It wasn't cheap to get into this country, and it's not going to be cheap to get citizenship.  I suppose they have to get every cent out of you that they can, while they can...and I also suppose that it will, in the end, be worth it.

Whilst I won't be able to vote in this upcoming election, I'll be able to vote in 2008.  If 'Flipper' Kerry is in office, I'll be proud and happy to cast my first vote against him.

Good for you Karen!  No more taxation without representation for you eh?  I would be interested in hearing about your experience applying for citizenship since I don't know anyone personally that has done it.  In other words, you better blog about it!

You're darn right!  I've been bitching about that for years...wasn't there a war over that?  (kidding, I know a little more American history than that!)

LW: I've been thinking about that, and now that her Maj doesn't mind us having both I think I might keep my British Citizenship as well.  My kids are dual citizens, and I have kin that live there still...it would just be a lot less beaurocracy to deal with should I decide I want to go back to the UK for an extended holiday or whatever.


It costs $320 to file the application, and take about 6-9 months to complete the process.  I think I'm going to wait until the start of next year to file - then I'll hopefully ring in 2006 as a US citizen.

Wow, I probably haven't read far enough back in your blog, but I didn't realize you weren't a citizen. I guess I just assumed... and you know what happens when you assume... HAHA... Best of luck to you on your filing. My wife has her interview set up this November, so she'll be having her next birthday (in Dec) as a citizen!

Chip:  No, I've lived here for 10 years but never applied for citizenship.  I'm tired of being at the beck and call of the INS, I'm tired of being taxed but not being represented, I'm tired of having to show my green card every time I apply for a job...so I'm doing something about it.  Congrats to your wife, btw!
