Getting Started
Blogs, what are they good for?

So I am new to this blogging scene and checking out various hosts. I am somewhat experienced with on line journalling. I've made a web page or two. None of it really stuck. Maybe this won't either. But I was reading Lawrence Lessig's new book, _Free Culture_, and I was struck by his argument that blogs are changing journalism (for the better!) and helping us to have a more democratic society. Yeah, I thought the argument seemed a bit utopian, too. But here I am. Go figure.
So this is really a get started kinda post. No real news. No real rants. Just a question to consider. Can blogs really challenge journalists to do a better job of covering rather than covering up the news? Or are blogs a place for people to feel like they've accomplished something when really they are only letting off steam, contributing more verbage into an information stream already overloaded and noisy?
Anyway, if you are reading this you have probably already considered these questions. Have patience. I promise I will bring something more like "news" to this blog in the future. But for now, I am just getting started. So...any pointers?
