Oh, we all have them... those songs we know we just shouldn't like, but something inside us just makes it so irresistible. Songs with bad lyrics or odd instrumentation, or from an artist that is tacky... or you love heavy metal but deep down, you just need to hear Debbie Boone belt out "You Light Up My Life" when no one is home. Or you like jazz and reggae, but the theme song from Footloose just gets you going too. 

Come on, I know you want to confess. It'll be ok... there will be no judgment here.

I'll tell you what, I even do a little quid pro quo here and tell you a few of my groaners:  

I recently did battle with the long version of Men Without Hats' "Safety Dance"... it started and I just couldn't stop it for almost 2 hours. There is also this whole drunken karaoke duet incident with Abba's "Dancing Queen," where I knew all the words,  that I am not particularly proud of, but in the interest of being honest, I feel it is necessary to be honest. And yes, I will admit it: I liked "Barbie Girl" and "Viva Forever" when they came out... yeah, I finally said it, and it's great to get it off my chest!

So, now that I've gotten the ball rolling... who will add to this motley gang of songs we wish we could forget. I've also included as an external link VH1's list of the worst 50 songs ever recorded to help you remember a few of them. :)

wow, I can't believe We Build This City by Starship is ranked the worst song. I thought that song was cool and I still do. :surprised:

Edith: Actually, it never would have happened if I didn't see Wil Wheaton on Call for Help... because I ended up reading this entry on his blog that night.

Wow, now I'm buggin' out because I thought I did a blog entry years ago about how the Safety Dance is my antidote to all other ear-worms. Or rather, it's the ear-worm that trumps all others for me, even Run Joey Run. It's not coming up in my search though so I dunno WTF.

Edith: I've always said that the way to get rid of those annoying catchy songs in your head is to think of the old theme from the Wide World of Sports.

Gideon, I love that scene....

Speaking of SNL alums.... you just made me think of an episode of SNL that had Helen Hunt and Hanson on it. They had a sketch on it where Will Ferrell and Helen Hunt(both wearing earmuffs) trapped Hanson in an elevator and made them listen to MMMBop over and over and over to show them the pain they caused the world by writing that song... but Will's earmuffs come off, and he gets infected by MMMBop's gloriously tacky beat while Hanson escape...

and that reminded of this Far Side comic when thinking about that.

I can not STAND Tubthumping -- it's right up there with Push the Little Daisies and Spaceman as my least favourite songs ever.

I actually liked Viva Forever - but I was 12 when wannabe came out - OH My Gosh - how can two princes -- spin doctors be in a Bad song list -- I love what's up and we didn't start the fire, from a distance - anything Meatloaf, breakfast at tiffanys and the theme from friends.

Heee...bad music....I could write a blogs and blogs about it.

Say it loud...say it proud....

But "Viva Forever" is what got me into the Spice Girls. This year. I missed the Spice Girls the only time they were popular and discovered them recently.

I also love Tiffany and the A*Teens. There are some Hilary Duff songs that are just pop delights.
