Abusive Strategy?

I've read the forums for a bit, and I haven't seen any mention of this abusive strategy that I just discovered, so I'm wondering if it's a bug?

My galaxy is set to gigantic, and all races have normal AI. I am playing v1.0.

I was in a fierce, long battle with the Drengin, and although I was winning (barely), my economy was going down the drain. At certain times during the long war, I was near debt, and my trade routes were attacked and destroyed. It got to the point where I had government spending set to 0%, and I was gaining only ~6 BC per month. (sidenote: While I was at war with the Drengin, I was also at war with the Altarians and Torians, but they weren't much of a factor. It was mainly the Drengin)

I don't really now how it got to this point. Maybe I built too many social structures? Or maybe I had too many ships, I don't know. But, my maintenance was eating up most of my taxes.

Anyway, I got quite desperate, and since my newly acquired Drengin star systems were on the verge of defecting to the I-League (the star systems had extremeley low morale), I decided to sell one star system to the Altarians (after making peace with them). This is what I got for that star system:

1) ~6000 BC in tribute for the next 999,999 months
2) ~14,000 influence points
3) 5 additional technologies
4) 2 trade goods (forgot what they were)
5) All Altarian ships + starbases

I sold another star system to the Arcean's and an additional one to the Altarian's, and I got similar deals.

Tribute to me is now set at 35,000 BC per month. I control +60% of the United Galaxy (or whatever).

Is this an abusive strategy that has been overlooked? Or is my difficulty setting too low?

Also, I might have a strong case supporing a cheating AI. When I sold the first star system to the Altarians, they had ~6000 BC. They were paying me ~6000 BC per month, but every time I checked their stats, the Alterians were gaining money! How is this possible?

Now the Alterians pay me around 28,000 BC per month in tribute, and they are still sitting on a few thousand BC. I haven't seen them in debt once, and the Altarians only have access to 4-5 star systems. How is this possible?

Finally, if you use a little imagination, this can be a really abusve strat. Before you invade a race, trade them a cheap star system for everything they have. Then once you start your invasion, take back the star system you traded, and sweep a race that just traded you all its ships/starbases.

If the planets you sold had special socil buildings on them, they would be worth alot. And AI intelligence in the area of trading has since been patched in 1.02.

Can someone comment on the Altarians generating over 28,000 BC per month with only 4-5 star systems?

What version of the game are you running? In the early versions there was a tribute bug that caused the AI to gain money when it pays a monthly tribute.

As I stated in the original post, I am running v1.0. That bug explains alot. I guess I have to upgrade the game. Thank you, Norin.

Actually, they are going into debt of 28000 BC per month. You've just killed off their economy. Congradulations.

Hopefully, the trading AI will be modified to give two different reasons for declining an offer. The current set (Why would we accept this?), and an insufficient funds set (We'd like to, but can't.)

No, Sigman7, you don't understand. The Altarians are paying me 28,000 BC per month, yet they are getting richer. I know this through espionage/talking with them. This is an insane amount of money to generate with 4-5 star systems.

I think what Norin stated is correct. There is some kind of tribute bug in v1.0, so I will update the game.

Yup, there was a tribute bug in the older versions where the computer would gain money by "paying" tribute. Thus, they think it's a great idea to take a system from the player and gain 6000bc/month from him.
