Really, I don't even know why Sir Peter is participating. This isn't going to accomplish anything. The majority of people who have been banned have been done so for attacking the admins. We all know how liberal the free speech policy around here is. That's not going to change.

For the most part this whole thread looks to me like a place for those who hate Sir Peter to gather and vent. Fine -- have fun. Let them speak their peace. What would be the point in entering into an argument?

Personally I think the effort would be better expended on someone who spouts hatred without satire like Marvin Cooley. He goes on homosexuals' threads and calls them "faggots" and worse without irony.

Sir Peter is the equivalent of Mel Brooks mocking Nazis. He's exposing the evil and holding it up for ridicule. Mel Brooks gets criticized for his stand that evil should be made fun of, too. Mel Brooks has faced these same kinds of attacks on his work. Mel Brooks isn't a Nazi, even though in his work the Nazi point of view can be given voice. Sir Peter isn't the things he holds up to the light either.

Maybe those who enjoy Sir Peter's work don't do so because the subscribe to what he expresses but because they delight in seeing balloons popped and foolishness laid bare. In the future when we meet those who resemble Sir Peter in belief and position we will instantly recognize the beast. He has peeled back the wizard's curtain and shown us what is behind the smoke and mirrors.

In the marketplace of free ideas we should not be afraid that possibly evil positions should be given voice. We should rather fear the evil lurking in the dark, unexposed, unrevealed, rotting the rest of the apples in the barrel without anyone ever seeing it. Keep the evil exposed to the light where we can all see what is going on. If we never knew what Hitler, Stalin, et al said, wrote, and believed how could we know the evil when it rises again? How often do we have a chance to come face to face with the disagreeable and offensive? We should have enough faith in mankind that the majority, when exposed to the virus, will build up the proper immunity. Some will not. We will always have evil with us. But once exposed, the majority has a far greater chance to recognize it when it comes and in so doing society as a whole will be in a far better position to defend against it.


In that regard Sir Peter has done far more for the cause than phoenixboi could ever hope to.

Maybe Sir Peter is the ratter. Maybe other people have been exposed. He's exposing those who would name call in the name of countering name calling, who would express hatred and bigotry in the name of countering hatred and bigotry, who would vilify in the name of anti-vilification, and never once see the irony.

You guys have a much higher tolerance for abuse than I do. We're not going to police the forums over hurt feelings. I admit I don't read SPM's blogs very much since he writes on things that I'm not into.

First off, there are lots of people on here that don't like gays, and promote that my life style is wrong. So? I chose not to read them. If any of them commented, I would jsut ignore it because that is their opinion, and in no way affects me. Sir Peter, from what I read of his stuff, is staying true to form to the person or character he is. Once he posted in one of my articles and was polite about replying that he might have misunderstood something. I haven't been here long, but regardless, he is who he is. Tougher skin is hte issue here.
Maybe I have a pretty mellow view on things, but that is just me. I don't know any of you, and don't know the whole backstory. Maybe, if you ask nice, Peter won't bother you? Blacklisting someone works wonderfully on your own blog.  It's when you comment on other people's threads that you run into problems, especially when that person follows you from thread to thread carrying previous arguments with them.

Wow guys, I'm only 17 and I think it's fair to say my peers are being more mature than all of the rest of you "adults". I'm going to admit that, by posting this, I have become as low and pathetic as the rest of the people still responding to this article.

How about we just make an agreement? If the article is getting this out of control just delete it. I mean, there's only a select few of us (who admit to it) who care about the points anyways. I'm asuming, that if you just simply delete the article you can start over and then just continue to censor out any of this conversation in the future. If you see remains in other articles ignore them, if they're in yours, delete them... it's as simple as that.

I understand that a lot of people are upset with what Pete has said, but that's no reason to have a fight that involves half of the active members of JU. I can't see myself actually taking any side but Brad Wardell's side... if you don't like it get rid of it or ignore it... it's your choice. Let disgusting posts stay that way. Let's not actually make it worse by keeping it on the forum page. I don't want to go look at an article with over 100 replies just to find that it's because people don't like each other anymore...

I wasn't going to weigh in at this point, but gene nash has an excellent point. While I admit I find Sir Peter's approach annoying, I usually solve the problem by not reading his threads. That being said, there's a true test of free speech at work here.

Frankly, I appreciate that Brad and Karma don't go censoring willy nilly. Brad has given us excellent controls; beyond blacklist, we can delete offensive responses on our own threads, and shut down the article if we so choose. Outside of our own blog, we have no controls over the other posters, nor, in fact, should we.

Methinks we're starting to take these blogs a tad too seriously. Perhaps a reread of LW's article on internet addiction is in order.
