Number of trade routes ?

from Stardock Forums
The manual says 3 are allowed but I only have 2 and the game says I am at max allowed. Anyone know why?

Wouldn't worry too much about the manual, things change... AFAIK 2 is the default and you can raise this with ability picks or with techs.

You can actually have up to 10 trade routes.

You can more through certain techs.

From what I have seen, one is technically the default, but you get +1 from trade technology. So by the time you can actually build freighters, you get 2 routes.

"The manual says 3 are allowed"

That was changed after the manual was printed but before the game was released. You get two initially (Madine is right, but it's a moot point), plus more as you research trade techs. If you play Evil, there's also a chance at having your trade routes restricted through a UP resolution.
