Is there any efficient way to pick technologies?

Does anyone know a better way to decide on which technologies you want to pick? The in-game tech menu dosen't help at all. You can print out the quick reference and the tech tree, but then if you want pick the technologies in some order to get a specific improvement or advance you have to spend 15 minutes shuffling through papers to figure it out. The game should have the techs laid out better. Can anyone help?

Hrm... a sudden surge in appetite for tech trees. Must be my lucky day LOL

There is also a tech tree on Javascout's site that is linked directly to his database. I wish I could do that with Excel documents; it's a nifty feature to have.

I usually sort them by Cost, and pick the cheapest, unless there's one in sight that I really want NOW. :)
