He wasn't THAT worthy!

With all due respect to someone who took a bullet while serving in his role as the leader of our country, former President Ronald Reagan was not the perfect person he is being portrayed to be at this time. His years of professional work in Hollywood trained him well for a life in politics. Knowing how to position one's self in such a way to always present your "best side" was a strong suit of his. He also had a wonderful knack for using humor to disarm his detractors.

That said, I find it hard to join in the chorus "Let's put him on the $10 bill!" Let's not forget that it was Ronald Reagan that refused to provide funding for AIDS educatioin and research that resulted in tens of thousands of people contracting the disease needlessly - and ultimately allowing the disease to be more globally dominating than it should have been. Let's not forget that Ronald Reagan's "voodoo" or "trickle down" economics served as an excuse for lowering the tax rate for the wealthiest of our country. And let's surely not forget that nasty little affair known as the Iran-Contra scandal.

Seriously, this man already an appropriate amount of recognition via Federal buildings named in his honor and an international airport. Let's stop the madness of seeking sainthood for someone who had as many failures as he had successes. And those referenced above only scratch the surface.

-Lt. Reagan was promoted to first lieutenant, Jan. 14, 1943
-On Apr. 1, 1953, his commission in the Officers' Reserve Corps was terminated as required by law and his military affiliation apparently ended

Dirk: I'll tell you what my friend... if I thought I could run for president I would. But that's the difference, I know where I don't belong. But your argument is that since I am not president, or not running for president I should keep my mouth shut. You have a lot to learn about free speech. Expressing my opinions in this room is but only one way I put my money where my mouth is. My "money is where my mouth is via community service, volunteerism and contributions to worthy causes. Where is your money? Where is your effort to make your community better? I hope it's solid, I hope you care in ways that are more than just talk. I do sincerely hope so! So please don't stumble into the conversation trying to make yourself look better with some punch and run comments - enter the debate or keep your insults to yourself.

That's the problem - it's all about punch and run. Stick around, stack your braincells on the table like poker chips and let's play? Your deal bud.

No one is saying he was perfect. You should know that only God, is perfect.

President Reagan was a GREAT man however!!

If you think you can do a better job, put your money where your mouth is
and run for President.

Otherwise, quit mis-interpreting, and quit complaining.

At least Reagan was not a peanut farmer.
At least Reagan did not disgrace the oval office.

He was a man of respect, a man of honor and could even make fun of
himself. Hmmmm, he even made us feel good about ourselves and our
country again. Sounds like a great man to me.

Newwavetech: 1. Get a user profile and stop being annonymous. 2. Don't assume that I'm not "in there". Why would you assume I'm not "in there"? Do you know about my life's work in the nonprofit sector? Do you know the hours, months and years I've dedicated to volunteerism? Do you know the amount of financial resources I give to nonprofit causes addressing the needs that go unattended every day? You know none of this. Again, stop with the insults and enter the debate, otherwise, leave. Insults = ignorance.

He made us all "like" ourselves and our country again. For that he was great.
For single handedly causing the collapse of the USSR, he was great.

If you're having such a hard time with this, why don't you put your money where your
mouth is and run for President??
Could you do a better job?? I personally don't think so, as usually, people that shoot off
at the mouth, are just a mouse and not a man.

He was a great man, and nobody, NOBODY, said he was Perfect.

Smartaz: You know what, thank you! Thank you for reminding me not to shortcut my answers. The ribbons, which you want to take great strides in making me look silly about, are actually referred to as awareness ribbons. They are used by many organizations to generate awareness for a disease, a cause, a concern or for mere remembrance - kinda like the yellow ribbon around the old oak tree if that reference helps a bit. Sadly, I think everything I need to know about you is summed up in your willingness to try to make me look bad circa "fallen law enforcement officials is not a disease, try again." Your smart ass response is unappreciate and proves my point that it's not about the topic or the debate, it's about making each other look bad. Congrats, you've successfully pissed me off. Consider yourself blacklisted. I'm new to the site - but I've at least learned what that function is. When you feel the need to debate without trying to make me look silly with your smart ass remarks, let me know. Otherwise, "try again."

Black&Blue is for fallen members of the law enforcement community.


Your thesis was "other ribbons for other diseases." Half your supporting evidence was "Black & Blue is Law Enforcement." I simply pointed out that Law Enforcement is hardly a disease. "Fallen members of the law enforcement community" also aren't a disease. Care to try again?

Did you know him personally, or any of his four children? I ask because none of them have ever used that description of him, even in the difficult times between them. In fact, they all say that they have always known that he loved them.
