performance compared to DA

hello there! first of all i must say that galactic civilisations 2 is the best game i ever played. thank you so much stardock. you brought me so many enjoyable hours.
i bought the dark avatar expansion yesterday and it really adds to the whole experience, but the performance compared to galciv 2 is poor. it is still playable, but it isn't as perfectly smooth as galciv2. the weird thing is, the performance is the same, regardless of the lower performance options i chose. in other words, it makes no difference at all if i play it in highest or lowest settings. i am no computer pro, i play on my laptop (duo core processor, GMA 950, 2 GB Ram).. and yeah, i know the graphics card is not perfect, but my question is that if i download TA will the performance be better? i know there are beta testers out who maybe can help me with that. by no means is DA unplayable on my system, but if i play larger maps, or the place gets crowded it really gets luggish and annoying.
