Can some explain Terror Stars to me?

I've never been able to successfully build one, so can someone please explain how these
things actually work? Each Terror Star tech let's you add a Terror Star component to
a starbase? Or is a Terror Star its own thing? Can a Terror Star attack anything except a star? How are it's stats computed? Can you put starbase weapons components on a Terror Star?

Why five techs? Is there reduced functionality at the smaller tech levels or is it just a blob of iron until you get to tech #5? I've kind of assumed it's the later... So I'm not sure I understand the point. Just so that you give your opponents something to see being constructed? Don't you already have to wait 10 turns once it's constructed to move it? I think I saw that somewhere.

It seems like it would be easy to provide reduced functionality... Maybe a Terror Star at level 4 could only attack planets. Or a Terror Star at level 3 could only attack starbases. Heck, with the upcoming victory condition, having something which could blast starbases would be pretty darn useful.

Come to think of it, if a Terror Star could turn a Class 0 planet into some asteroids, There'd be some pretty great peaceful uses for the thing.

A terror star is a special type of starbase; you assemble it one stage at a time (constructors for each) until complete. Once it's finished, it takes ten turns to power up and become usable, at which point it can be used to attack stars (nothing else).

The time and difficulty in constructing one is indeed largely to give opponents time to notice and respond to it. It's a game-endingly powerful weapon, so it wouldn't make much ense if it was fast and easy to build.

All planets destroyed by a star going super nova (thanks to a terrorstar) become asteriods.

1. Get all techs needed.
2. Build Terrorstar.
3. Install all five Terrorstar modules.
4. Wait 10 turns for every thing to come online.
5. Once online, send the Terrorstar to a star to blow things up.

If you are not sure what to do exactly, send the Terrorstar next to a star, and then order it to move to the parsec that the star occupies (as though you were attacking a ship). You should start to see some animation.
