They're all grey!

Suggestion for the a change. So I was playing today Korx against the Drengin, Iconians, and Krynn. I got them from random opponents. And all of them are a different shade of grey on the graphs. Not helpful at all.

Is there really such a color shortage that we can't make these guys more easily distinguishable? Is it just that grey makes a good ship color?

Well, you can always change these colors all by yourself right from the setup screens!

Fact is, i already DID a lot of corrections to these defaults (while maintaining some backups just in case - melancholy mood hits the mindset!) to customize everything into my favorite (or more comfortable) "environment". Which is to say, thanks to SD for planning ahead with the players concerns and giving huge control over many features; including personal choices for races colors & what else. ;)

Being slightly colorblind myself (my wife just says it's a guy thing), I even have to squint to see the difference between Dregin and Drath. Korx/Iconian I really have a hard time though, Krynn are a bit darker.

That's odd... the Drengins, at least, should be red.

You know that when you change a colour of a race it keeps that colour when it is played by the AI?

Perhaps he meant the Korath.

I didn't change the color of any of the races. It's a completely fresh install. Perhaps it was the Korath, but I thought it was the Drengin. I got crushed in that game relatively quickly so I didn't even get to explore much, and I turn blind exploration on.

I'm not color blind. There's just 4 different grey races somehow. There's gotta be some unused colors in there. Maybe the Korx could be fuschia. Or puce. I hear puce is good. The Korx could be pink. Everybody likes pink. And pink is evil just like the Korx.

For the Krynn, you need some sort of religious color. Ochre isn't, but it'll work.

Well the colours of the races are fully customisable, Click the race(s) in the selection menu before the game, change their colour under appearance and save.

You can choose from some pre-set colours or use the RYB sliders to choose a colour that's better suited to your tastes.

Speaking of colors, and I know this has been suggested before... but it would be great if players could change the color of the "fog of war" background. I could never figure out why it's that muddy brown color, instead of something neutral like gray. I dialed down the saturation of the Drath orange color for the UI, but I couldn't use the resulting color I wanted, because it was too close to the brown fog color (my autopilot paths were hard to see).

Even if it's not actually coded into the setup screens, it would be nice if we could set an RGB number for the fog in a config file somewhere.

Even so, that's four races defaulting in various shades of light grey-- seems like it might be a good idea to change that.

Well, i'm not here to question SD designers choices, but it sure is somehow more difficult to distinguish between too many shades of greys. My point was that the human player can alter these figures permanently and save them as often as s/he pleases.

Lucky you, i was just about ready to design a special scenario for X-Worlds where ALL aliens had a swift cyan type on the map against the single lonely tiny lavenderishlike of X-Com. Thus, you couldn't be able to tell them apart for TACTICAL reasons. See, that's the trick with very similar or exact values... the scope of gameplay changes.

And yet, too many greys is annoying, i agree.

Dark Violet hue is directly opposed to sharp yellow on the "artist wheel", btw. Saturation and/or Lightness included. I won't bother anyone with RGB/CMYK theories though. Still, primaries DO mix well if properly handled.

What about some of the Minors common avocado? I can't tell their ships apart, do you?

Coloring power comes with the decisions you must take - or not.

I agree on this
When I play the game I use 99% of the time the strategy mode/zoom so its easier to control huge or immense galaxies but always hated this muddy brown colour it should be customizable or at least a more appropriate space colour like blue gray or something..

Exactly. You might be able to change it, but by DEFAULT it shouldn't be so poorly designed like that. Me as Korx, against an Iconian, Korath, and Krynn opponent is a recipe for frustration. I just remember that on the minimap, Iconians are the lightest, Krynn are the darkest, and Korath are pretty much the exact color of the fog of war.

It would be nice if the fog of war color was adjustable. It would be nice if Stardock could spend some time on the race colors to make them more unique. I know I can customize them myself, but it would be better if I didn't have to. That's my "feature" request for today :)

Going to agree. More color to default. The ability to change it is excellent but getting them all reasonably different is harder for some, AND a default standard is always a plus for screenshots etc for showing others.

Will save someone explaining who is who depending on the screen.
