Mutual Alliances

I think that races that agree to an alliance must be forced to go to war with any civilization that the other ally declares war on or has war declared upon them. This was sort of the case in Galactic Civilizations I and Alterian Prophecy, but I would like to see this in Twilight of the Arnor. It can be a seperate agreement to just an alliance, or built into a regular alliance, but I would really like to see alliances become more then just "ok, now I have an alliance, but my allies don't do anything" type of deal. I want allies more involved, especially the AI. Human players can still, and should be able to make a decision if they want to join their Allies in war, but I want alliances to be more involved.

Forced No I don't agree, there should still be a choice.

However a negative modifier for refusing to help them in their 'hour of need' for good races or conquests for evil races might be a nice touch.

However if we are talking about a defense treaty, again that could work. I don't see alliances as always being of a military nature, quite often for me they are more of a non aggression pact or trade orientated.

I may be mistaken, but in the game right now if someone declares war you, your ally will join the war to support you. If they are attacked, you will be asked to join the war, if you refuse the alliance is broken.

However if you attack someone then they won't join in (it was your choice). Also, if one race attacks another and both are your allies, I don't think you need to join in the war.

Is that not the way it works in TA?

The requirement of allies to go to war alongside each other regardless of circumstances as it was in GC1 was dropped from GC2 because it meant the AIs were always getting dragged into wars, to the point that everyone was pretty much constantly at war with most everyone else.

Alliances in GC2 are effectively mutual defense pacts.
