Using the IRC

Been on the IRC identifying a problem this morning when I realized that I'm not really sure that I have been using it correctly. Is there a tutorial on it somewhere? Looked on the Wike but didn't see one. I can get on okay, but what I'm not sure about is how to chat in general or if I want to talk with another person directly that is also there. If someone can help I would appreciate it. I promise I will save it to memory, not sure which one though.
