Winamp 5.5: 10th Anniversary Edition Launches

Still whippin' the llama's ass

http://www.winamp.com

One of the oldest (and still actively developed) audio players is celebrating its 10th birthday today with the launch of a new version.  Winamp 5.5 left beta and was declared "final" by the guys over at Nullsoft today.  This new version though isn't just a quick rinse and polish of the last stable version, 5.5 sees Winamp really make a play at the centralized media center application market.  They've taken a lot of the disparate services associated with Winamp and consolidated them to sit within the application itself.  They're also taking advantage of their relationship with AOL (AOL bought Nullsoft some time ago) to get content that way.

Of note, Winamp 5.5 now includes:

  • Support for multiple devices, including iPods
  • Access and share your music and videos with Winamp Remote
  • Integration of Shoutcast audio & video channels
  • Play and Playlist the best music on the web with Media Monitor
  • Receive dynamic song recommendations
  • Control Winamp from your browser with the Winamp toolbar.

Also included is a completely new skin to show off all the new components of Winamp.  Of course, there's a free and a Pro version.  Pro gives you the ability to burn CDs, rip tracks etc.

Remember, we have a sizable gallery here at WinCustomize dedicated to WinAmp skins.  Here are a few of the most recent additions:

Black Kid
KJLIM

iFlex Amp
TheD2JBug

Evolardnas
SMAR

Diamante Slim

A great piece of software just got greater

I have a Winamp 5.35 and I will try this version later, therefore I can“t talk anything about it regarding the new functionalities, but I agree with Stylah about the new modern default skin, a bit too classy. Anyway, congratulations for the Nullsoft team for this amazing player, and thanks for featuring my skin in this article.

I like this new version.

I've been BETA testing it and I had more than a few problems with the Bento skin but it looks like they might have got it worked out.
Love the new Milkdrop Vis. Looks great and has a pretty light CPU hit. I tried out the surround sound at home with some of the dowloads they linked last weekend and it's great!
Guess I'll have to cough up a few bucks for Surround Sound on my office system..........

A great piece of software just got greater.........totally agree. Have been using it for 7 years and nothing compares with it, for me anyway. Historically, the software developers always had a pioneering vision.

Kudos to AOL for supporting and continuing the development of Winamp. I do remember how everybody pronounced a certain death for this brilliant player when AOL took over.

Love the new look and agree that CPU is very light.......been playing it for several hours now.
A Very Happy Anniversary to Nullsoft!

remember, you don't have to use the crappy original skin or this new Bento skin. CleanOne is particularly well regarded as a modern skin. If you haven't seen this yet, check it out. Very tasty under XP and Vista.

Note the glass/transparent design.

Pretty cool, except the WinAmp Remote tool doesn't really work that well. It doesn't really tell you how to use it, but other than that, Winamp has always been pretty cool.

I've been using the betas of this edition for a while now and really like it, the full release is just fantastic and I will be upgrading to the pro version when I get around to cashing up my debit card.

Top marks to Nullsoft on this one.

God! I'm getting old.
[I'll revist my ever-increasing age again in more depth if Duke Nukem Forever ever ships.   ]

Let's just skip that because it'll force me to do the same.

Duke Nukem is a platform video game developed and published by Apogee Software (now 3D Realms), featuring the adventures of Duke Nukem. The game was released on July 1, 1991.

Yes/No?

There are quite a few podcasts available for download. I'm not sure if the podcasts you are subscribing to are available or not.

Thanks Hankers.Mostly BBC ones that I subscribe to.

Typing "BBC" in the search area for WinAmp podcasts list 16 that are available. Probably are more that can be found with a better defined search criteria.

Ahh that's good news Hankers,I'll give it a try now, cheers.

Though I've been using WinAmp exclusivly since before the dawn of time, for it's easy use and high quality sound/video, I can't say I'm impressed with the video performance of this the latest release.

Running any given movie in full-screen (res 1600X1200) displays it very choppy and in a poor quality compared to the easiler version I used; WinAmp 5.24 - at least on my machine.

So I'm back to using WinAmp 5.24
