Sputnik was cool, but Voyager rocks.

On this the 25th anniversary of Sputnik, at a time in which anywhere between 3 to 7.5 million Americans, claim not only to believe in Aliens, but to have actually been abducted and returned by them, I just wanted to give a big shout out for Voyager.

Click me for Voyager page

One of the fun things about this mission is the 'Golden Record' which contains sounds/images/music & greetings from Earth in 55 different languages.

I have to admit to a small reservation about the translation of the Amoy greeting which when translated to English reads :-

"Friends of space, how are you all? Have you eaten yet? Come visit us if you have time."

So on the off chance Voyager actually bumps into a space-faring race; better hope that they're vegetarians.

Hehe & oops. Well spotted that man. Now all I have to do is account for the missing 25yrs and the odd feeling that I'm being basted in my sleep.

The Voyagers were equipped with three radioisotope thermoelectric generators to produce electrical power for the spacecrafts' systems and instruments. Steadily operating for 26 years, the Voyagers owe their longevity to these generators, which produce electricity from the heat generated by the natural decay of plutonium dioxide.

Now thats one hell of an energizer bunny.

barking up the wrong tree

Er, that'd be spaceships, wouldn't it?

Actually, didn't know lions 'barked' ....just don't get tempted while you're there, then, to cock yer leg in the vicinity of the hub caps and/or fenders.

I.R. - always a pleasure to see you on the boards

Sorry guys, no Treetog special - just loving the idea of sending out a satellite with a map of our solar system and the message - "feeling snacky, here we are" ......

In it's own way, as Jafo noted, this too is a classic theme.....

A race of aliens known as the Kanamits land on Earth and promise to be nothing but helpful to the cause of humanity. Initially wary of the intentions of such a highly advanced race, even the most skeptical humans are convinced when their code-breakers begin to translate one of the Kanamit's books, with the seemingly innocuous title, "To Serve Man.

Chambers: What’s the matter, Pat? What's going on?

(Reverse angle looking toward her. Her lips tremble.)

Pat: I...I finally deciphered their language. All of it. I read their book.

(Close shot a suspended speaker overhead. A Kanamit's metallic voice rings out.)

Kanamit's voice: Please move ahead. You're holding up our departure. Kindly move ahead.

(Cut to: Two shot Chambers and Pat)

Chambers: Well?

Pat: Mr. Chambers...Mr. Chambers, the first page is just a collection of English words with their own translation. But the rest of the book...the rest of the book — It's a cookbook!

The extra added value here is that 'Amoy', who produced the greeting, is known in many places for it's dipping sauces. Could have been worse I guess, Wincustomize could have had it's own greeting - 'Come to Earth & skin for pleasure'
