here is my dumb take on beta 3

this is the first game i have been able to finish without it crashing.

i think the AI needs more aggression.

i played on the large random map.

8 players normal.

non of the AIs went interstellar.

1 AI was defending the star well. this was the one that had the whole system to its self.

1 AI put a fleet in the star well to cut off my reinforcements which by this time i didn't really need.

i have 1+ million credits 100000 metal and 90000 crystals.

as i said in my other thread we need some trade ships to tie the empire together.

i have not played multi player.

and please don't say i need to play hard before complaining about the AI. on normal the AI should be going interstellar if it is able to.

ai is supposed to be better in the hotfix (apparently there are problems with it and the random map)

also, i know you said dont say it, but i have to, the ai in these beta's is not all that good so if you want even half a challenge, you HAVE to play against hard AI's (or people)

PS craig, i hope you fixed my name exploit in the hotfix (if you dont know what im talking about, get on ico in the next ten or so minutes <3)

I've noticed that if you are very agresssive, the AI on Medium and sometimes on Hard doesn't attack untill it has around 30-35 Cobalts... Then of course it kicks my butt...

yes the one that you start out with is aggressive but the rest weren't. by the way normal=medium

The AI still being pretty weak is known.

"Weak"... or "nonexistant" until you fix the "won't-leave-my-homesystem, won't won't won't won't won't!" bug?

Ai? there was an AI in this version?

lol, yeah!

One idea in here that is good is interstellar tradeships.

Perhaps if you upgrade one or more trade stations they can outfit larger interstellar ships that have a bigger impact on your economy... thus giving you extra incentive to take systems around different stars.

ok i started a hard game.

when one level one carrier sova. and 25 frigates can wipe out 35 frigates before i can even get the sovas shields down is not playing a better ai it is just playing against ships with a lot more hit points. i also had a lvl 5 akka in that battle.

Wait a minute, I thought ironclad said that the hard AI "does not" cheat?

I've only played a few games as its on my friend's computer and they were all hard games... I never had a problem taking the AI down because it never left it's home system...

But is this true? Does the hard AI's ships have more hit points? Because that is cheating. The hard AI has to be hard because it's smarter... not because it gets free stuff.

It doesn't cheat. I'd have to see the specifics of the battle but the AI probably managed his dps distribution, overkill avoidance, and positioning better than than you. He may have also have had superior research.

Which can make quite a large difference. 5% improvement here, 10% improvement there doesn't sound like much, but especially the shield upgrades are very powerfull. (More shield points and regenerating mean longer shields up, means much less damage (shield mitigation diminishes damage percent wise!)

Against carriers you either need your own fighters or flaks. Also never attack a capital ship without other capital ships (mostly it will lead to your defeat). The Akkan is not a front line capital ships (although its IonBlast is good against other capitals, it's very weak against masses of frigates).

i don't know with 36 ships ganging up on one ship the cap. those shields should have gone down.

the AIs research couldn't have been that much higher than mine he only had three wells.

i had 5 of each research stations true i didn't research weapons. but the AI should at most been able to get lvl 2 on weapons. since it had already bought a new cap

Post the replay. For example at rapidshare or similar.

It's the only way to see what went wrong and how you can improve your tactics.

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\RecordedGame

There you'll find the records. They're dated so you should find the appropriate ones.

36 frigates will take down a capship, but it takes a long while. And a sova will beat an Akkan hands down even if you ignore the fighters. Add those in, and "poof" your advantages are gone. The akkan really isn't that great a capship, except as a support unit in larger fleets.

And while I don't have the numbers, do be aware that some capships have better armor/shields/HP than others (e. g. Kol > Sova, I know for sure, and I think Sova > Akkan, Dunov, and Marza) even at same levels -- higher levels will of course change that around.
