SoundPackager 0.9.0.0 BETA Feedback

SoundPackager 0.9.0.0 BETA Feedback

https://www.stardock.com/products/soundpackager/
First pass:
  • Let me skin it (Although that's some nice branding you got going on there)
  • Let me set it not to open to the welcome screen after first load
  • Make the SD logo a hyperlink to SD.com
  • Tool tips are friendly
  • Lower right corner of the pakcage information looks square instead of rounded ("This sound package is a collage . . .")
  • I would call the edit button Orange, not yellow as stated in the text above. I'd go with yellow if it weren't for the very yellow note icon to the left.
  • Got some sentences combined in the text of the "More Packages" Tab
  • It would be cool to see something like skin browser for Sound Packages on the "More Packages"tab. Otherwise seems like a lot of tab with little funcionality
  • I accidently deleted the first sound my trying to lower the volume level by clicking the red minus button. That's all me. I'm a doofus.
  • A "System default" package on the "Packages" tab might be intuitive.
  • A "Package curent theme" might be useful too if possible
Oh . . restoring failed (but I didn't have a sound scheme in place [Vista Business]). But nice reporting feature.
SoundPackager (Control + C to copy)
Restore Windows Default Error

SoundPackager cannot continue setting the Windows sounds to their Default settings.

Please include the following information when reporting this error.

Line 5

Now to go out collecting sounds. I think my first pass will be my kids. Too bad there's not a recording function in this thing. Might not be used much . . but could be fun.

Right, that's exactly what is not working on my system and I don't know why.

Check in Windows/media and see if the default sounds still exist. They'd be a whole bunch of files like Windows XP . . . (example Windows XP Balloon.wav). If those files are there, its just a matter of picking the right ones.

I've tried that, it's not working, it keeps erasing my choices. I make the corrections with the windows events default sounds, click save as and save it as a theme file, but my changes aren't saved. Seems like a system malfunction of some type to me. Also, my windows default theme file is corrupted now. So, some type of bad software interaction occured. I'm waiting for the update to see if that helps.

A fix is going up tomorrow for this.  Thanks for your patience.

And, thanks for your rapid response. I'm experienced working with computer systems for a number of years in systems - not an expert in Windows XP, but I learn. With regard to my numerous posts it was to convey to those who reponded I had 2 problems first, a sound packager issue which has been identified and will be corrected in the update(thanks ); and second a control panel sounds and device sound theme configuraton issue. I'm thinking this second issue is something has happened to a Windows XP program and this probably happened due to possibly other software not being nice to XP. I have a typical configuration AC '97 (onboard) using the AC97 Codec ALC658 Audio Driver Version 5.10.0.6220 with DirectX 9.0c. Soooo up to date there and functioning.

Using the control panel in XP and selecting Sound and Devices and manually selecting event sounds does work temporarily it's just when I do a save as to save my manual changes in a new theme file that all my manual sound changes I MADE are changed to no sound for explorer and internet events and some others as well. This second problem I am thinking is a result of very possibly more than one software program malfunctioning. Sooo, since correcting this problem is not a major issue to me, and the only certain correction for it is do a complete XP reinstall, it just ain't gonna happen. Not for a problem this small. Besides, when SoundPackager applies a theme it does work and I will have (I hope) fully functioning sounds through SoundPackager again. I may eventually be able to track a solution that will allow my manual sound corrections to be saved as a fully working theme file agian. Based on prior experience, I will have to try unloading lots of software, stop it from restarting and do a reboot. Then try making manual sound changes. This method will only work if my XP program files that manage sounds and devices haven't been corrupted.

SOUNDS like a fun future project and a great way to learn more. Later.

On the Package editor screen there's an Import Sounds button.
I had nothing selected and pushed it.  I then browsed to a *.wav and hit Open.
What did I do?

I then selected an element and did the same steps . . thinking that maybe it was an alternative way to assign a sound.  Nothing.

Wazzup with that button?

Zubaz

After you import the wav, you'll find it in the drop down list of sounds to choose from for the different events.

It does about the same as the 'plus' button, only the imported sound is not the selected one for a particular event.

I haven't tried importing multiple wavs, if it works, that would be a quick way of getting all your wavs associated with the package. Then it would just be a matter of assigning sounds to events.

Thanks Pictorus!
And yes, you can import many sound files at once.

Very useful.

We're planning a contextual help system for the application. Questions like those are proof that it's needed.

Wow.

I just created my first soundpackage. So very easy with the import sounds function.
[Unfortunatly, it *is* Star Wars Ep. IV licensed sounds and I can't upload it. But trust me . . it's wicked cool]

Windows start = Obi Wan "Well hello there"

Zubaz fires up Fett

Thanks Stardock.

I've done like Zubaz with some Bugs Bunny wav's I've downloaded. It works great for me but isn't uploadable either. Fun for me though.

Garry . . I've been thinking . . fair use might apply here.

There was a similar situation with the dream files.  I wonder if it can apply to some degree here

Additional rules on fair use of video clips:
Fair Use allows for the limited reuse of copyrighted material so long as it is not done for financial gain of the person reusing the work, nor does it financially harm the original author by denying them sales etc.  In the case of Dream animated wallpapers, users can make limited reuse of video files created by other authors provided they meet the following requirements:

  1. The animations used in the .Dream file is either 15 seconds in length of shorter OR less than 25% of the original video file in length (whichever is shorter).  So if you found a 20 second video you want to use in a Dream, you can use no more than 5 seconds of that video.  Anything else, you are limited to 15 seconds.
  2. You provide credit to the original author in the skin comments AND provide a link to your original source.
  3. Understand that if the original owner of the work asks us to take it down, provided proof of ownership, we will comply immediately.
Hmmmm . . . .

I'd like to get SD's opinion then Zubaz. If that works, I might fill in a few holes in my Bugs soundpack and run it through. I'd sure like to try your StarWars pack. An Indiana Jones theme might be cool as well. In fact, I think the website for the new movie has clips. Checking . . .

nope.

The modification to Fair Use Rules posted by Zubaz above are as follows:

Additional rules on fair use of sound clips:
Fair Use allows for the limited reuse of copyrighted material so long as it is not done for financial gain of the person reusing the work, nor does it financially harm the original author by denying them sales etc.  In the case of SoundPackager sound collections, users can make limited reuse of audio created by other authors provided they meet the following requirements:

  1. The sounds used in a SoundPackage are 3 seconds or less.
  2. You provide credit to the original author in the skin comments AND provide a link to your original source.
  3. Understand that if the original owner of the work asks us to take it down, provided proof of ownership, we will comply immediately.

SoundPackage remixes do NOT fall under fair use.  You may not take an existing SoundPackage and rearrange sound assignements, or take an existing one and just add a small number of new files.

Great news Zoomba! Thanks!

Uploaded.

Feedback: I wish that I could upload the default image for soundpackages like the one below and have a preview sound play.

You'll understand better if you go look at my package {deleted by submitter - me, because the clips were part of a purchased product they are disallowed.  Fair enough; no worries}. If it's OK to use that image, let me know and I'll update.

Preferred upload image:

And for the record, that's not everyday wear. It was for a Halloween contest for my daughter. (And I won.)

It's all working now with the latest Beta (0.90.011). Thanks guys.

Will the SoundPackager be listed in SDC Skin Browser and Wincustomize Browser when it's out of Beta?

One feature request.

Allow alternate location for sound package files. The default to My Documents has a downside in certain cases. For instance, the computer is on a domain. The My Documents is redirected to a network share. The network goes down. Packages not accessible anymore. Take it one, more likely, scenario further. The computer is a laptop, same network config, but you are working remotely offline from the network. A choice of where they are stored would alleviate this.

You can copy the soundpackage files to another location and load from there if you like.

The best unworking and crashing app Stardock ever did

Even after uninstalling it, it still leave corrupted things in registry (specially if you've not on an english Windows ...) the only way to make my PC system sounds working back correctly was to export registy entries from a second PC i have (with has nearly same main programs - mean with system sounds - running) and import them on the corrupted PC ...

BTW, it will be much simple and safe to be able to get sounds as a .zip soundpackage and unzip it in the Windows\Media folder ...

neophil78, If the program crashes it includes instructions on how to report the crash. Namely emailing the SoundPackager.debug file which contains detailed information for the developers on the crash. Also, just saying that it crashes doesnt help us to help you. Please be more specific so we can help get the program stable for you.
