MV League Topic of Discussion thread

Hi guys. We certainly need to clear up a few points and rules before the next round and also if we are to get into the Altmeta.

Some Topics to open discussions,

Team victory bonus.

Bonus points RE - Slowest game
- 3,2,1 High scoring game

Non Submital

I'm sure there are many more. I have a few ideas myself, mainly pertaining to streamlining the league, but i wish to hold off and hear others points first.

So, debate away....

Ty guys...

I have managed a game for this round. With the whole round to play i am sure i could have at the very least tripled my score...but in the true nature od the league i really did enjoy this game, it was a fast flowing game always on the brink of being broke..

I had fun....

My round 3 submission....

Hey Commish, you should know better than anyone submissions go in the Round 3 thread

I am having troubles here...as i tried to edit the post the forum signed me out.....weird.

Funny I've seen this happen my self, where I'll be responding to one thread only to have the reply popup in the wrong thread. Could of been what happened to you.
Maybe has something to do with having multiple threads open and responding to them all...the forum just shit itself i guess...

Oh well the other guys can have a laugh at my mistake...

One of the things that's really put me off from joining in the past, among more nitty-gritty things (like you guys pulling out Super Abilities) has been, believe it or not, the bonuses. I play for fun, and I have a lot of fun with this game, but I've never once played to try to win as fast as possible, or with as high a score as possible.

i think this is a thoughtful comment. i don't really have a big problem with the bonuses, myself, i just see them as an extension of the rules for the round (here are map settings, here are goals). that said, i think it could be interesting if we introduced a greater variety of bonuses beyond speed and score, to mix things up. but there are two problems with this: 1) i can't think of any potential bonuses that'd be very easy to verify or keep track of (the league's honor's system not withstanding), and 2) the more rules we have, the more work there is for neilo and FireBender.

all i'd say is, if you're interested in joining, do like i did: set up a game on the current round's settings and give take it for a test drive. i normally don't play for a high score or a fast win either, but it's a small map, so it didn't really take me all that much time to do, and it was a lot of fun to try something different than my normal style of playing.

Maybe we should do another round call if we can't move on to DA by now. I 've always been a low-end user PC-hardware-wise (don't you dare spell that with an "L" ), but they've made this game so much better that even my PC seems to be able to handle DA maps up to middle size now (I am currently even trying a gigantic game again).
I know Mumble has been using DL in the past - but I think it was a matter of pride-stubbornness - religious conviction for him.

Super Abilities are a variable subject to my random generator. Some games they will be there others they will not, all part of the idea of the league, to play the game in such a way that it is not your usual style or choice.

That being said, your comments are valid and useful. The biggest problem RE scores and bonus's is coming up with something that makes everyone happy. There is much that could be done with the league, but having everyone agree on it is the problem.

Also it is preferable to keep the rules as simple as possible, as to not confuse or alienate anyone.

If you do happen to hit on an idea about scoring/bonus's please tell us and we may give it a shot. Any and all input is welcomed and i hope that at some point you may decide to give it a go.

Cheers,
The Commish.

i think that's the real heart of the matter. without making the league too much of an imposition on current/future participants, not to mention too much work for those who run it, there's only so much we can do to measure a game. there's comparatively more we can do to vary the game setup.

from what i gather altmeta will open new dimensions to scoring, no? i'm honestly not all that familiar with it except for its basic premise, so i'll have to check it out.

random: have you guys ever played a (usually drinking) game called "President/A**hole"? MVL sorta reminds me of it.

No can't say i have, but with Australia's current leader, i think by the sounds of the game it would prove most popular!!!!

If that would be the only issue keeping you from adding some new bonuses, it's enough to build a simple excel sheet in half an hour where you can just paste the submissions and it does all the calculations?
But I tend to agree that too many rules make the league too complicated, in particular for new joiners. And it gets harder for each team to maximize its performance under more rules, you'd almost need someone to keep track of that per team

I play for fun, and I have a lot of fun with this game, but I've never once played to try to win as fast as possible, or with as high a score as possible. You may want to consider this line of thought, as I may not be the only one sharing it - at the same time it would be a bad idea to not have any way to differentiate between scores, because we can't have multiple winning teams - But it's something for you guys to mull over, I suppose.

Actually, I think that we've gone about as far in that direction as possible without as you say effectively having all rounds end in ties.

Instead of raw scores which can vary in the many thousands we have a single bonus point for high score. Also speed isn't part of scoring in the real MV but it is generally agreed that game speed is as indicitive of ability as score if not perhaps more. Even in this case the differentiation is merely a single bonus point for individuals and perhaps 2 for the team.

I do understand and appreciate the idea behind your comments, but I also think that's it's still valid to have some quantative measure and reward for ability, otherwise there is no real competition and without competition there is no real incentive for improvement.

Check out The Great Dalmuti, a card game designed by Richard Garfield (of Magic/V:tES/Netrunner fame). It's a variant of "President/A**hole", easy to learn, even for non-gamer types. I tried it a few weeks ago and had barrels of fun. I was rather inebriated at the time, admittedly, but still.

well...we could always see about adding a Recording Secretary to the mix. Mostly it all be the same as is now: the Commissioner would set the rules for the round, rule on exceptions, add new players to teams. The Vice-Commissioner, is there to coordinate with the Commissioner, and if in the absence of the Commissioner, should fulfill the duties of that Office (what constitutes an absence however I will leave for others). The Secretary would be charged with presenting the rules decided by the Commissioner to the members of the League, keep a record of submissions, team points, and past scores, and also if changes or additions are made mid-round, make sure that there is proper communication as such.

(btw, if anyone thinks we could use this position, I'm willing to take it; I was Recording Secretary of my college's student government for two years, and this is a LOT easier than that lol)

as an american, i can't say we've got things much better. but the basic premise is: it's a card game. each player gets an equal fraction of the deck, and you place cards each turn in the same manner as uno - either a number higher, or the same suit as the last card on top of the pile. you can chose to skip or are forced to if you can't beat the previous card, and if everyone skips after someone plays something, that person goes again and can play anything in their hand (beyond single cards, you can play pairs or triples, or straights of 3+ cards; straights composed of pairs or a quadrupicate beats anything).

you start with a few stock rules, such as "4 skips the next player, 7 reverses the turn order." each round the first winner is the president. the president each round makes up a new rule, such as "whenever you play a 5 you have to sing the name of an STD." whenever you fail to observe a rule, you take a drink (in the drinking version), the president doesn't announce the new rule (players have to figure it out), and rules from each round carry into the next. it basically is a game of who can keep track of stuff while getting increasingly drunk.

the subsequent winners get titles, vice president for 2nd place, etc., and you can arbitrarily order around anyone ranked below you in a round (to a degree, usually only amounting to 'take a drink' or 'get me another beer'). the person in last place is the a**hole, aka the Beer B**ch (who typically spends a lot of time getting people beers). only the president can override orders, which is fun because it causes drunken teams and alliances to form.

it's pretty fun with a group of 4 or 5.

ghostwes, i've heard of The Great Dalmuti in passing, so i'll have to check it out.

I also think teams of 5 is best, for the flexibility reasons stated by others.

It is also a good idea to have someone to take care of the tedious administrative things like Silverbeacher suggested. If it turns out you cant do it Silverbeacher, I would be wiling to, as tedious administrative work is what I do for a living.

Sentient species taste better... Sentient species taste better...

The need for a an administrator is probably Firebender's call. My work load was lessened when he took over calculating scores, i just re-check them now. So i am fine in my duties. If Fire wishes help in that role or to split his duties i certainly have no issue with that.

And thankyou Fire, most kind of you....

I was trying to decide where best to post this, and since this is the Discussion thread, I suppose it best fits here.

While I am glad that my team, the Crusaders, won this round (my first round as part of the MVL) and also that I was able to win a bonus pt as fastest time in category (go me!); the resulting...actions and discussions at the end of the round, made the victory a tad...hollow for me; lessened, if you may, in a way.

While I fully feel the goal of the MVL is to have fun, and enjoy the game, which I do thoroughly, I am...concerned, about future instances where similar circumstances may occur.

As hard I personally aim to be diplomatic and inclusive, 'democratic' if you will, there may be instances with the MVL where we will have to be 'cold' and 'calculating' in contrast with the joy we have of playing the game, the camaraderie of our teams, and the elation from winning.

I am not here to point fingers, or even speak toward change. Everyone had good intent and has a certain philosophy of thinking and going about the MVL that may not perfectly coincide with another's. I just ask that all involved take note of their actions and in the future they take a moment before hitting the "post reply" button.

I truly hope that I don't come off like I am admonishing anyone, that is not my intent at all. Just wanted to voice how I felt at the end of this last round. Instead of being happy of well, stampeding quite simply, over the competition, I am actually a bit saddened, and I KNOW that isn't the point of the League at all.

Thanks everyone
Silver

It's clear you have some issue and as such I think it best if the concern you express gets resolved. However the description of your concern seems so lacking in content due to an otherwise admirable intent of not stepping on anyones toes as to leave me totally in the dark as to what your issue actually is.

In the best interests of the league I think you should express your concerns a little more explicitly so that there is some chance of dealing with them in a mature manner.

Oh, he is just a newbie who doesn't want to piss off the higher ups.

And after your little snap at Firebender I'm not overly surprised that he took effort to not to metion the slightest intention of insult.

I don't intend anything either, but I think that the matter was taken out of proportion and with a definite edge of seriousness I don't really care to see in the MVL.

Well, I MAY take offense to being called a "newb" LOL (not really, its ok ) but to be honest, I just had to spend the last hour hunkered down in the closet under my stairs becuz of a tornado, soooo....all in all, whatever, just get it worked out and have fun!!!

and its starting to get really windy again, so its time to pull the plug on my system til the storms pass...be back later
