Upgrading Ships

Upgrading Ships1

I have a question. I noticed that when I finish upgrading a ship design and I already have ships of that older design on the map, A ship upgrade screen comes up after I hit save un the Shipyard. However it does not have an entry for my upgraded design on the list. Is that a bug, or am I missing something? As it stands I have to go and select the ship that needs upgrading then update it.

If I understand what you are saying, you are upgrading an EXISTING design that has ships on the map and saving that design under the same name, but not updating the whole class of ships at that time.
If this is the case then, no, not a bug. If you update a ship design with the same name, it will only show the #'s for ships of that upgraded design, the older versions will not show up in the shipyard at all. The solution is to either upgrade the entire class of ships when you save the design (a checkbox in the upper left of the save screen) which can be VERY expensive, or to use a different name. I usually use a naming scheme that involves the ships name, like SHARK and then add an identifier to the end like A,B,C OR 1,2,3 or such like. So you end up with SHARK A, SHARK B, ETC.

Well I have upgraded ships and given it a diffrenet name but when that upgrade screen comes up, it only list other ship designs of that class.
For example: Lets say I have a Large Scale ship called Enterprise and I also have 3 other Large scale ships and lets say I call them by the following names(Battlestar, Carrier, and Cruser)
Ok now lets say that I just research a tech that gives me Warp drive. So now I want to upgrade my Enterprise class design with the new drive. so I go into ship design and upgraded the design and save (now I have tried the same name and tried a different name.) At that point am Upgrade screen pops up but the choices that I have which are located to the left of the screen to update only has Battlestar, Carrier, and Cruser not Enterprise. So what is the point of having an upgrade screen come up after you saved you upgraded design if you can't upgrade your older ships of that design at that point. It makes no since to me.

Ok, the upgrade screen, is it popping up as soon as you save the design or when you click on an individual ship and choose upgrade? If you save it as an existing name the computer will prompt you with the upgrade screen to upgrade the entire class and will list the other designs but not the one you just did (IIRC it is asking do you want to upgrade the class to this current design or one of these (the list)). When you click on an individual ship in the field and choose upgrade, the new design should be in the list.
It is also possible that (and I know you said they were all large class) you have a class mismatch. I once designed a beautiful large ( I thought) ship full of my latest tech and saved it, when I went to update, it wasn't in the list of LARGE ships. I am embarrassed to say I based it on a cargo hull.

Cargo hull dreadnaughts, for the win.

Yes the upgrade screen I'm talking about is the one that pops up as soon as I save the design. Now I have no problem with upgrade screen when I click on the screen. I am going to look at this tonight. I thought that when the screen pop up after I save the design the only choices I had to upgrade exixting shipd of the old design was to pick from the list but if it is already set to design these shipd then I just misread the screen. Oh well still learning the game (and I also jus t got civ4 and I'm learning that one as well
