It depends on how major a change it is.
Several versions were not compatible with newer versions in DL, and it was found that generally it is best to only update between games.

My current game was available, on each of my computers, when I moved from 1.5x to the various betas of 1.6, eventually to real 1.6, and then 1.61. However, there are no guarantees of compatability of all features when moving up. I may not have been using some feature that would break from the change.

In general, when scanning over the change log for 1.6, I don't see anytning that looks like it should have trouble with a one generation old save game.

The dev-endorsed but independent game aid, Galactopedia, will not work with 1.6 or 1.61. It does not like the addition of the SB Repair module. If you are an html programmer, I'm told that you can repair the Galactopedia code (its open) pretty simply. Or you can make it work for all practical purposes by doing what I did, save a copy of 1.5.127 (or .098 if you don't have the betas) under a different name, and point Galactopedia to that as source file. Do the repointing before the update to save yourself some file manipulation headaches. You can save some space by throwing away the tutorials, music, planet data, heightmaps, and other non-ref'd stuff from the copy but be conservative, Glactopedia apparently looks at more files for source material than you might think.
