Less customizable program icons?

I tried searching the forums for this, but it's a hard-to-word problem, so I had no luck; if there's already a forum out there for this issue, I'd love to read it.
Basically, I just updated to 1.9, and LOVE it, except for one thing: in the older version, it was a possibility to make different aspects of a program show up as different icons.
The best way I can describe this is with AIM: in the old OD, I was able to make conversations show up as one icon, and away messages/buddy list show up as another. I am no longer able to do this in 1.9.
Does anyone know a way to change this, or if I should go home and cry to momma?
