Can't see planets, ships, asteroid icons or general graphics under Vista 32

I have downladed the latest patches, I have installed the latest drivers for both my sound card and my video card and I cant see all those wonderful new graphics Stardock is talking about.
I can play the game just fine, just no animations, or planets, or asteroids or ships or anything. Also I can see the event movies, but thats all.
I can see space and the nubula and the stars just fine, just nothing else in it. I do see icosn, or placement markers where these objects should be however. here is a screenshot.
