Question regarding Ship Upgrading

First post, first topic today, i have a question regarding the Ship Designer, when i design a Ship and later want to update it with better technology, the game strips the ship from all technology, only the ship and "looky" addons stay. My question: is this a bug or gamedesign? It is pretty, well, dumb when you have to add all techs to your ship, even when you just want to add a new drive or weapon system.

Check out the options menu. If in the game, try esc, then look for a checkbox like "keep stuff on ships when upgrading" (forgot the actual wording and too tired to look it up)

In Options - Interface, it is the last option on the right side.
"Remove Functional Components When Upgrading A Ship Design"

If you want to retain them, uncheck the option.

Thanks for the Answer, pretty dumb idea to have such a option if you ask me, but hey, i am no game designer
